SO sorry for the MIA’ness…this is the first time I got to a computer since coming to Paris! It’s been breathtaking, absolutely surreal. Everywhere you look is just beautiful. This is my first time in Europe, so I’m still soaking it all in. It’s only Day 1, but I’ve been able to wander around most of the Place de la Bastille district where I’m staying, as well as Les Halles and Quatier Latin (Latin Quarter). My French is still not up to par, but the Parisians have been really sweet and helpful, humoring me at times even though my pronunciation is utterly pitiful. Thankfully, the train system has been as easy to follow as everyone had told me it’d be.
Just had a couple bites today, since I was mostly roaming around and being all wide-eyed and touristy. Stopped first at La Fountain St. Michel, which was the first place we saw off the St. Michel stop on the 4 train.
The first thing that struck me about all the cafes we saw was that they all have seats facing towards the street so people could people-watch and eat at the same time.
We each had cafe au lait (lattes!), which were about 4.5 euros each! Then we (maybe over-tipped) our waiter 4 more euros, so we basically had 2 lattes for $26. This town aint cheap.
Funny though, those cost about as much as the chicken gyros we had off this super cute street, Ru de la Huchette, near the Fontaine St. Michel. They had so many restaurants and cafes in the area, it was so hard to figure out where to eat. That’s just about everywhere here though, so after the end of our roaming, we just went with the closest place that had a juicy lamb and chicken roasting in the front. I totally forgot to look up the name, but I’m pretty sure it was Maison du Gyros. It was the best thing ever — fries INSIDE the chicken gyro pita sandwich. The fries needed to be salted a bit, but the chicken was delicious!

not only do i read perezhilton when work is slow (its pathetic, i know) but i bookmarked your food blog page now. never been to france but all i hear bout is their bread so love to hear the hoopla bout this bread and what is up with the french and their obsession with bread
ahhh the bread is actually fantastic, fresh and perfect…just bought a baguette today and ate with hummus, onions, kebaabs, and cheese.

Fries inside the sandwich is the best. Isn’t it surprising that this hasn’t caught on in the states? Fries and a burger can only be topped by fries IN a burger.
