FOOD - "The Delicious" - Travel Feasts - Turkish

Authentic Turkish food from Istanbul *drool*

Ok ok, trying to calm down because these food pictures my friend Sadya just sent me make me want to just jump in the computer screen and feast. Is that weird? I wish we could really do that.

But anyway, Turkish food is my Achilles’ heel and I’m dyinggg to go to Turkey to try their authentic dishes. For now, will have to settle for these amazing food pictures from Istanbul.

Mixed Kebaab platter, 50 lira (about $30)

Sadya said this platter is a mix of various chicken and adana kebaabs that easily fed 5 people.

From Sadya:

These two pictures are from a place in bursa called Kebapci Iskender, famous for their iskender kebabs. They literally pour of pan of ghee over each one of our plates when they bring out the food.

They are about 13-14 lira each, so about $9 a plate.

Oh man, all that ghee definitely doesn’t make for a heart healthy meal, but it’s supposed to be amazingly good, and happy stomach–>happy person. Can I go to Turkey now?

Thank you, Sadya, for the pictures!

Beauty - "The Lovely"

A belated spring (beauty product) cleaning

bes

Wow.

I knew I was a product fiend, but this past weekend, I felt like I was at an all time low. I was cleaning out my room, and found boxes of beauty products I’ve bought and STILL haven’t gotten around to trying.

Among the mess, I found some oddities I just thought I’d share (in hopes that you can convince me that this is totally normal, that you do the same thing, and that you are, in fact, willing to share some of your own unused, borderline unrepeatable I-can’t-believe-I-own-these products as well. thanks).

*Clearing throat.*

Exhibit A: Peppermint foot cream.
First question: Why must foot cream be fragranced? And is a separate cream for feet necessary? OK, I’m not going to act like I’ve never used foot cream before going to bed hoping for miracles that didn’t happen (what? NY can really ruin your feet OK..and I really share way too much on here, don’t I?). Just not this one.

Exhibit B: Wine wipes.
I got this as part of a gift bag to that Spa Week event I went to last April. I’m guessing you use it to wipe your teeth with after you drink staining red wine.

Just think it’s funny that I own this even though I don’t drink. Any takers? I’m sure it can double for you coffee addicts as well.

Exhibit C: Spa Sister Bathing Gloves: “For Spa Smooth Skin”

Spa Sister Exfoliating Bathing Gloves

To be fair, this was a gift sent to me, and I had every intention of using it since it seems like an easy way to exfoliate (and promises smooth, shiny skin). Though, I just had a random thought about how weird it might be to be wearing gloves in the shower. Ok sorry..next…

Exhibit D: Botanics Refreshing Foot and Leg Spritz

Botanics Refreshing Foot and Leg Spritz

What? This is awesome. Yeah, so I picked this baby up at a giveaway a longgg time ago, and it’s one of those things I never think about but always use when I see it. When I spritz this on my legs, I think about how wonderful it feels — just like how a spray can of cool water might…

OK, Fine. It’s useless.

Anyone else?

FOOD - "The Delicious" - Italian - Spanish/Latin American

Sosa Borella, just so-so.

Feels like it’s been a while since I had a food post!

Treated my friends Yasir and Sarah (aka YasRah) to dinner after they got married a while back at Sosa Borella in midtown. The Italian-Argentinian cuisine sounded promising.

I love the outside of the restaurant, all white with an outdoor patio on the 2nd floor; looks like they took a slice of Italy and planted it in NY. It feels like you’re eating in someone’s comfortable, dimly lit, wooden-floor kitchen. The food though, was just OK.

Roasted Beets salad: grilled endives, goat cheese, sherry vinaigrette over mesclun, $14

Fresh Fettuccini: grilled shrimp, broccoli, fried garlic, spicy plum tomato sauce, $18

Milanesa De Pollo: breast of chicken, lightly fried, topped with tomato bruschetta, $18

I was expecting something really different since it was considered a fusion cuisine, but it seemed very — normal? — to me. It was too bland, and I remember thinking the fries were comparable to McD’s..but not as good. Sorry.

The chocolate cake-hazelnut gelato dessert and cappuccino were good though! Maybe this place can be a nice pit stop for dessert?

Still trying to find more yummy restaurants in midtown!

Today’s ‘Why?’ Moment: Mustaches for girls.

June 29, 2009

I know I said I’m all about facial hair, but I totally meant that for guys. So why are “Stylish Mustaches for Girls” even in existence?

Stylish Mustaches for Girls, $7

Stylish Mustaches for Girls, $7

I love that they have a Bollywood ‘stache. Anyway, this is their reason, at least according to their website:

“Everyone loves a mustache, but why do boys get to have all the fun?

This set of seven stylish mustaches is made specifically to accentuate feminine features. Each furry lip ornament has adhesive backing and is made of synthetic hair in a girlish shade of pink.

Goes great with almost any outfit!”

Highly doubtful about that last sentiment.

I’m all for equal rights, but let’s leave facial hair to the guys, yeah? Just this once.

Thoughts??
