Why this might be your last chance to eat at Tavern on the Green in Central Park!

If you haven’t eaten at famed Central Park restaurant, Tavern on the Green, now’s the time to do it — the iconic New York restaurant has filed for bankruptcy, reports The New York Times.

In a statement, the current license holder, Jennifer Oz LeRoy, chief executive of Tavern, said that the filing was “our only alternative given the current situation.” She said the decision was the result of “two factors — the extreme financial distress brought on by the current financial crisis and the City of New York’s decision not to renew our license.”

Crazy!! They further report that for years, it had been one of the highest-grossing independently owned restaurants in the country.

Tavern on the Green used to be a sheepfold that was turned into a restaurant in the 30s. I’ve always passed by and admired their ornate topiaries. It looked like a lit up mini Wonderland in the middle of the park. If you’re like me, and always wanted to eat there but haven’t yet, rush on over because you only have til Dec. 31st this year before their license expires.

Sad times.
