Crumbs cupcakes food fight: Team Shy or Team Mel?

Shyema and I have always been divided on the Crumbs cupcake front, and our most recent food fight is about to jump off.

I like a cupcake that consists of soft, moist cake, and icing that delivers an even balance of sugar-to-butter flavor ratio to the palate.

Shy likes a cupcake that has soft cake, soft icing, and a homemade taste (I personally think their cupcakes come pretty close to all of these, though, they could use a pinch less sugar in the icing), and she feels about Crumbs how I felt about the desserts on my cruise–they look good, but just don’t deliver.

Maybe something has changed with Crumbs in NYC since I left for the West Coast, but our cupcakes are fresh and delish.

In fact, I plan to spend Valentine’s Day (also known in the single world as “Black Sunday”) with a few of my girls gorging on one of Crumbs’ lovely holiday themed treats.

Crumbs' Valentine's Day cupcakes

Are you on Team Shy or Team Mel?

okay – team shy absolutely and completely. crumbs cupcakes are NOT good. if you are looking for cupcakes that actually satiate your sweet craving without giving you three new cavities, check out chickalicious dessert club or even spot dessert bar – amazing cupcakes with interesting flavors and fillings!

Crumbs cupcakes LOOK really good and their flavors and combinations are extremely enticing. Enough to make you haul over and go get one. Only to realize you don’t even want it that bad once you take a bite. I don’t know it it’s because some are not fresh or what but sometimes they are not soft and taste not fresh. I’m Team Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Lil lesser known place but AMAZING cupcakes (Shy – we’ve already agreed on this imperative-to-life topic). But NGL — Crumbs DOES get the award for best-looking and most creatively decorated.

Omg, I can’t believe chickalicious has a dessert bar! That is an amazingly innovative idea. I was super happy to see this, until I realized that Chickalicious is the bakery I hated when visiting home/NYC. I think they were also rated highly by NYMag. Their icing was terribly runny and the texture reminded me of something rather unpleasant. Still on the hunt, I guess.
http://www.chikalicious.com/ …for those of you who want to check their cool dessert bar idea out.
    PS…Team Mel 😉

I’ve never had Crumbs, but this whole argument seems like a good metaphor for the dating world.

Also – Butter Lane! My mouth is watering just thinking about how well they perfected the balance between sweet and satisfying.

Hmm, I need to do some taste testing before I can decide which team I’m on… 🙂

    i’ll always remember crumbs.
may 12th, 2009. 9am. beverly hills municipal court. keith and i just got our mariage license.
i want to celebrate this beautiful sunny day with an expresso & a cigarette (i know, but 1. am french 2. champagne is sadly not complementary to a marriage license, even in bev hills).
i see a cute boutique not far from us, with ‘baked with love’ painted cute & big on the window. the cheese balls we are sure took it as a sign and began posing and shooting each other in front of it.
we go in and happily order with our best grins.
but…how can i say that…i’ve sure learnt not to expect too much from american expresso (no offense, to each their own talent) but i did think an american peanut butter cupcake baked with love in beverly hills could live up to my not even so high expectations…boooooo it so didn’t! seriously, if love tasted we all really want a piece of it?

I used to like Crumbs but every time I’ve had them recently they’ve been dried out and too sweet. I think Pinisi in the E. Village has the best red velvet.
