Djerdan – Bosnian food, Midtown West

Summar and I work together near Herald Square and every day is a perpetual hunt for something interesting to eat for lunch. The area is so commercial and blah. Basically, it’s not easy. Summar recently ended up finding Djerdan which serves Bosnian food. Can’t say I ever had Bosnian food, so we decided to try.

They say they have the “best burek” in town so we ordered their spinach burek. One slice is massive…kind of a meal on its own (I’m sorry I forgot to take a picture of it). It was pretty good, not the best I’ve had.

We noticed there was a lot of veal on the menu which I’m never down for so we went safe and ordered (mostly) chicken:

Grilled Chicken Salad, $7.95
Grilled Chicken Sandwich, $8.95
Veggie Sandwich, $7.95

The chicken itself was also pretty good (read: not mind-blowing but not bad). I really loved the tomato spread that comes on the side of the sandwich. The sandwiches are also MASSIVE, and the bread is tough and a little hard to cut with our butter knives. We ended up just taking the bread off (since I thought it didn’t add much to the flavor) and began eating it like a salad.

The place was nice enough, a little hidden midway between 8th and 7th Avenue on 38th. It wasn’t my favorite, but at least it was something different than pizza.

Oh, and a little frustrating, we paid the bill with half cash and half credit card…which translated to explaining to the waitress 3 times on how much to charge on the card. I promise it wasn’t that confusing!

Eh. Rate it 2/5. The hunt continues…
