BATF mention on Dove Correspondent, Liesabeth’s blog

July 27, 2010

So touched to be mentioned by Liesabeth (one of the lovely Dove Correspondents) on her blog this week! Please go check out the blog and be sure to comment!

FOOD - "The Delicious" - Greek

Mr. Greek Gyros in Chicago, IL

A certain unnamed individual got mad at me recently because I don’t ever have pics of Chicago food, even though my family is based there and I go back home often. The reasons though are mostly because, A) I don’t eat out much when I’m home; and B) when I do, I eat embarrassing things, like the following from Mr. Greek Gyro in Greektown:

Philly chicken sandwich

Gyro sandwich

Crispy pizza roll

Cheese smothered fries

The sad part is, everything except the gyro above was my order. I don’t regret any of it, especially that crispy pizza roll. That’s right.

Beauty - "The Lovely" - Beauty on the Streets

Beauty on the Streets: Mehwish Khan

July 26, 2010

Name: Mehwish Khan

Age: 28

Occupation: Writer & Makeup Artist

Location: Chicago, IL

“I like knowing about everything. My family refers to me as ‘Meshipedia’. I think it’s important to be well-rounded. Knowing about what’s going on around us makes us more sympathetic to important issues we may otherwise ignore.”

My style is: classic.

My favorite designer: Anyone who makes beautiful stuff – I’ve always loved Michael Kors‘ clean sense of style; Roberto Cavalli makes stunning gowns.

People usually compliment my: makeup.

I’ll never forget the time: I got chased by a deranged woman who insisted that I was an African princess.

Worst habit: making funny faces.

For my skin, I use: My Clarisonic brush. It’s amazing, and I feel just a little pampered every time I use it.

My favorite makeup tip: Always apply foundation before concealer. Once the foundation is on, you might realize that you don’t need concealer afterall, or less at least than you would’ve used.

Current beauty product obsession: Avon Glimmersticks Waterproof Eye Liner. It really is waterproof and it glides right on!

But I also can’t live without: L’Oreal Liquid Eyeliner. The brush just works for me, it comes off easily with water, stays on when you want it to and it’s totally inexpensive!

My favorite scent: I have a thing for “Chance” by Chanel. “Michael” by Michael Kors is also really nice.

People might be surprised to know: I never went to school for makeup – I actually have a degree in Communications and Advertising. When I’m not a makeup artist (weekend job), I’m a copywriter (weekdays job).

My favorite hair product is: Frederic Fekkai Wave Spray.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: Chocolate. How can you trust a person who doesn’t like chocolate?

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Roy’s in Chicago. They have this butterfish that is like nothing I’ve ever had before or ever again.

Though I can make a mean: I am an awesome cook. Chinese and Italian – the best!

Who inspires me: Zainab Salbi – Founder of Women for Women International. She’s done amazing things at a very young age. What she’s done really matters in the grand scheme of things.

Beauty - "The Lovely" - Nails

Watercolored nails

At least that’s what I think of when I saw Sabeen’s latest nail art :). Reminds me of a watercolor painting:

What do you think?

FOOD - "The Delicious"

Whole Foods cracks its whip on Organic-certified products

July 24, 2010

By Melissa Stephans

Starting next year, Whole Foods will be removing beauty products that do not meet the USDA’s standards of “organic” from its shelves. Stores will continue to carry non-organic products, but will be holding those improperly listed as “organic” to the government’s standards.

Too bad this change will not happen before year’s end, but it’s still welcomed news to those of us who want natural products. Thank you, Whole Foods, for taking action against companies who mislead consumers!
