Beauty on the Streets: NYLON’S Faran Krentcil

Name: Faran Krentcil

Age: 28

Occupation: Digital Director for NYLON magazine.

Location: NYC

“I walk everywhere, even at 2 am — it’s where I get my best ideas. Sometimes I watch the same movie ten times in a week (ones I’ve done: Factory Girl, Some Kind of Wonderful, Harry Potter #3). I think vanilla ice cream totally counts as dinner.”

My style is: Wayward fairy princess trying to hide her wings.

My favorite designer: Stella McCartney, the Chloe years.

People usually compliment my: Playboy spreads. No, not really.

I’ll never forget the time: I fell through a floor. I was 19. It was scary and bloody but also fast and fun, and it’s the closest I’ve ever actually been to Alice in Wonderland.

Worst habit: 4 am bedtime.

For my skin, I use: SPF 30 in the morning with a few drops of M.A.C foundation blended in. At night, I use baby shampoo as a cleanser, followed by Clarins face cream.

My favorite makeup tip: Flash your blowdryer over your eyelids to set liquid eyeliner (especially cat eyes).

Current beauty product obsession: Maybelline Falsies mascara — the closest thing I’ve found to fake lashes. Seriously amazing.

But I also can’t live without: Red lipstick, because when I wear it, I don’t have to wear anything else. I like Lipstick Queen’s red sinner for night, and Lancome’s red haute matte lipstick for day. And yes, I think red lipstick in daylight is totally fine (especially if you pair it with a white peasant blouse, cutoffs, Converse, and a ponytail).

My favorite scent is: A boy I like. But I’ve been wearing Stella McCartney’s perfume for years, and sometimes I mix it with Chloe or Anna Sui’s Rock Me.

People might be surprised to know: My family is very into theology. We get into spiritual arguments at the dinner table, and my brother is a Buddhist monk!

My favorite hair product is: Bumble and bumble Super Rich Conditioner. It has saved my social life since high school.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: fajitas. They must have been born without the fun gene. Also, people who say they don’t like sweets – that’s like people who say they don’t watch television. There’s something going on there… Give me a cannoli and a True Blood marathon and I will give you bliss.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Mermaid Oyster Bar on Macdougal Street. Their fish tacos and po’ boys are seriously to die for, and it’s $1 oysters at the bar during happy hour. I also love Artichoke Pizza SOOOO much – I always get one slice of Artichoke and one slice of Sicilian, even though I know I won’t be able to finish it.

Though I can make killer: Lasagna, seared tuna, gazpacho, clam chowder, corn chowder, and I love making mussels in Italian, French, and Thai broths. I can also do some Jewish food very well, though my mother never lets me…

What inspires me: Old art books, overconfident teenagers, plays in small theaters, the ocean, cool women who are also real businesswomen, classic rock, playing hooky, my camera…
