Torchy’s Tacos – Austin, TX

By Burger Guy

FYI: Burger Guy has relocated to Austin, TX. He also now eats tacos and says “ya’ll.”

Torchy's Tacos

One thing I learned in New York is that ‘hole in the wall’ joints have some of the best food in the city. Well, here in Austin, they don’t make holes in their walls because there are giant man-eating crickets everywhere…like the ones hanging outside in my parking spot every night. WTF? So instead, the locals hook us up with unhealthy deliciousness from the secure confines of their trailers. So far, I’ve only checked out one of these trailers called Torchy’s Tacos. It was good enough to warrant a mention on BATF. So the first day I went, I got the Brushfire Taco and The Democrat.

The Democrat

The Democrat: shredded beef barbacoa and onions topped off with fresh avocado, queso fresco, cilantro and a lime wedge served on a corn tortilla with our green salsa.

Brushfire: Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapenos, mango, Sour cream, and cilantro served on a flour tortilla with our Diablo sauce.

I inhaled the Brushfire before I realized I had to take a picture. That’s why you only get the one pic. Those grilled jalapenos really hit the spot. Randomly, there are bits of mango in there which I thought would be weird at first but complemented the fire in my mouth nicely. I went back the next day and tried The Trailer Park. It was alright but so far the Brushfire and Democrat are my favorites.

Trailer Park: Fried chicken, green chilies, lettuce, pico de gallo, and Cheese served on a flour tortilla with poblano ranch.

The tacos are about 3.50-3.75 each. The Brushfire and Democrat were DELICIOUS. The Trailer Park was a bit bland. I could have used a bit more indigestion.

Ok, anyway, I haven’t even gotten to the best part. As a side, my friend and I split some tortilla chips with some homemade green chili queso sauce. Here’s the description from their menu:

“Our homemade chips with our delicious green chili queso topped off with guacamole, queso fresco, cilantro and diablo sauce”

Chili queso

Hands down the best cheese dipping sauce I’ve ever had.

Anyway, I’m going to hit up a few more trailers in the future. There’s a frozen hot chocolate stand next door to Torchy’s. I’ll check it out and report back. Assuming I don’t get eaten by a cricket first. Seriously though, these crickets are massive and they can fly and they shout racial obscenities. Man I hate crickets.
