Bobby Flay and Lori Loughlin teach us easy meals for kids

Bobby Flay and Lori Loughlin

When you think mayo, you probably don’t think healthy. Well, yesterday, Hellmann’s invited us to a luncheon with celeb chef and restauranter Bobby Flay and actress/mom Lori Loughlin to demonstrate ways to make quick and healthy snacks for your kids (or guests?).

Using Hellmann’s Light, Flay and Loughlin quickly whipped up chicken gyros (which he made a point to say is pronounced “YhEE-RO”…I have definitely been in the chicken/rice line arguing with New Yorkers about this who pronounce it “jy-ro” while we Midwesterner’s kinda pronounce it like “ghee-ro” — we’re both wrong); an egg salad with turkey bacon; and mini fish tacos.

The two had such a vibrant and fun dynamic. Some highlights:

  • Lori mentioned how potatoes would be a great addition to the egg salad. “Are you trying to change my recipe??” Flay asked facetiously. “I can’t help it, it’s the Irish in me!” Loughlin answered.
  • When one of the bloggers said she was starving since she was vegetarian and there weren’t any veggie options, Flay and Loughlin quickly used the last remaining hard boiled egg to make a special dish (which Flay exclusively served to her. Too sweet.)
  • The funny thing is I love chicken and not so much a fan of turkey bacon or fish…but surprisingly, I loved the last two dishes the most! That’s probably why these recipes are great for picky eaters, as they mentioned on the outset of the demo. Also, Flay says he’s a big fan of mixing textures which he did in these dishes and really makes for interesting/delicious tastes.
  • Throughout his presentation, Flay pointed out how much more of each ingredient he uses from recipes than you would think. While grinding lemon skin to the tzatziki sauce, he said, “If it’s part of the ingredients you need to be able to taste it…it’s not in the recipe for no reason.”
  • Flay mentioned he prefers real bacon over turkey bacon (they used turkey bacon to cut the calories since they were trying to demonstrate healthy meals). But, when he uses turkey bacon, he likes to chop it up and make it crispy, like he did on the egg salad here.
  • The two hung out afterwards to graciously meet and take a picture with everyone…am I the only one who finds it cute when celebs introduce themselves to you?
  • Finally, just look at these parting gifts:
  • FYI, you can join Hellmann’s Facebook page to help them donate $75,000 to Share our Strength, a national nonprofit that connects children with nutritious food for a healthier lifestyle, through their Swap ‘n’ Share Sandwich program. Check it out when you get a chance…

Any other mayo fans? What’s your favorite recipe using mayo?

    7. Hmm it looks like your site ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations for rookie blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
