MAC makeup backstage at the IIFA Awards 2011 – Toronto, Canada

Backstage with MAC at the IIFA Awards

MAC Face charts for the IIFA show - 6 different looks in one show

“Tonight’s makeup is a Bollywood celebration with lots of glamour, drama, and color,” says Toronto-based MAC makeup artist Jane McKay backstage at the IIFA Awards. The looks were designed by lead artist Vimi Joshi. “The makeup is not as dramatic as last night’s IIFA Rocks show where the dancers had eyeshadows and rhinestones on their lashes, but it’s equally as beautiful,” says McKay. They kept the top very light reflective and shiny by mixing 4 different glitters to achieve a final green shimmer, but left the lower lash line matte but bold with a teal liner (Tealo) topped with a darker Bottle Green shadow. Here’s a quick run through backstage, and more details that follow!

{Maybe we should have rehearsed that first, ey? Did the best I could in two minutes before rushing out!!}

“When you’re designing makeup for theater, it’s really about high contrast shapes,” said McKay. “You can’t do a soft smoky eye, and make an impact at a distance, especially in this venue.” With a venue as big as Toronto’s Rogers Centre (where the IIFA’s are being held this year), McKay adds that the extra glitz on the eyes will at least keep them from getting totally lost on stage.

A quick guide to the IIFA look:
On face: M.A.C. Fix+ and Full Coverage/Studio Finish
On brows: Dipdown, Silver Dusk and Golden Bronze for highlights
On eyes: Amber Lights (lid), Soft Brown (crease), Blacktrack (top liner) and Tealo liner and Bottle Green (lower lash line). LOTS of Zoom Lash mascara.
On cheeks: Coppertone and Gingerly

The only thing that changes throughout for the 6 performances will be the lip color and bindis, says McKay. Can’t wait to see the dancers take the stage tonight!

PS, we caught Shah Rukh Khan rehearsing with Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza backstage! He was wearing a knee brace but as energetic as ever. What a stud.

    I missed most of the IIFA, but I do have a cool story to share my mnaeratl grandfather was a set coordinator of Bollywood movies in 1960 s Mumbai. He was sometimes used as an extra, and my mom grew up surrounded by the glory that is Indian movies! Trying to track down a couple of movies where he made brief appearances to gift to my mom I know it would make her day as he has long since passed.
