“My goal is to build the next big brand empire! Think the Lacoste logo, think Boy Meets Girl’s logo even BIGGER :)”

My style is: I like to think it’s eclectic, edgy, and demure all rolled into one neat little package.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Alexis Murdoch – Orange Sky or Breathe
.

The best part about starting my own brand is: I love seeing someone walk down the street wearing a piece I made. I usually stop and dial my mom’s cell phone to tell her the exiting news: ”Hey Mommy, just spotted an adorable girl rocking my line in the park!” I’m also so grateful to be able to give back through my brand. Working with several charities to raise awareness in collaboration with Boy Meets Girl® and me brings smiles all around.

People usually compliment my: Ability to multitask in all the aspects of building my brand in PR/Marketing/Design skills ;). I also get complimented on my personal style and starting new fads. I was the first to ever show my friends in grade school charm necklaces and created a catalog for all my friends to buy charms from me. Fast forward, I’m asked to be one of the first to introduce RadRingz (from the makers of Silly Bandz) to my fans.

I’ll never forget the time: my mom and I worked together at my first trade show in 2001, and we sold to our first department store: Bergdorf Goodman. My mom was so excited — it was and still is her favorite store in NYC! This was pretty much the launch for my career.

For my skin, I love: (1) Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer– it gives me a healthy glow and provides SPF 15, perfect for protection for everyday; (2) Kiehl’s Acai Eco-line of face wash and creams. They are not only good for the environment but they make your skin feel flawless; and (3) Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence Spray

.

My favorite place in the whole world is: Tough question! I love different places for different reasons. But, if have to give one place I would say Bora Bora. It’s the closest place to bliss/nirvana I think anyone could ever get. I went there for my honeymoon and hope to go back sooner than later 😉

Current beauty product obsession: Kiehl’s beauty products — they are not only affordable, but have done wonders for my skin!

But I also can’t live without: Tara Smith hair products! Check out my recent post on Tara’s products.

Worst habit: workaholic.

My best advice to people who want to work in the fashion industry is:
1. Be prepared to work like you’ve never worked before.
2. Being a talented designer is not enough. You need to learn how to be an effective marketer, networker, salesperson, service provider, writer, stylist, merchandiser and psychiatrist too.
3. Work with multiple vendors and never stop sourcing potential new ones. It gives you leverage and protects you from catastrophes.
4. Last, but not least: BELIEVE!

My favorite scent right now is: white musk.

People might be surprised to know: I used to tap dance and love the famous tap dancer Tommy Tune.

My favorite hair product is: Tara Smith’s Base Coat Serum & Top Coat Glosser.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: sushi.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Pure Food and Wine in the Flatiron district.

Though I can make a mean: I don’t cook much due to my busy schedule. But, I do make rad mountain eggs!

Who inspires me: Zandra Rhodes, Elie Tahari, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Kate Moss, Coco Chanel, Patti Smith, Patricia Velásquez, Oprah, my sister, my mom, my dad, and my Dj Blue Steel (aka my husband)…the list could go on, but I will leave it for now :)

Justin Bieber spoofs his own fragrance ad with Jimmy Fallon

June 27, 2011

I admit, I totally watched Justin Bieber‘s Never Say Never movie on my Air Canada flight last week (what? It was fascinating…and appropriate — he is Canadian ya know). That kid has one loyal fan base! Probably the only news I really heard on the radio besides the IIFA’s was how Bieber was attacked in NYC. Anyway, I just saw this hilarious spoof he did with Jimmy Fallon recently:

Caudalíe Paris’ fragrance launch at The Plaza Hotel in NY

By Nicci Jordan Hubert
There are some moments in life you just won’t forget. My trip to The Plaza for Caudalíe‘s fragrance launch was one of those moments. Here’s what happened:

The Plaza heaven

As I stepped out of the non-glamorous subway, wearing my non-glamorous practical footwear, I looked to my right and saw the shimmering beacon of NYC luxury, The Plaza hotel. Unable to avoid the slight shame of switching shoes in public, I did what I had to do (I went all out and wore these babies), then glided along the sidewalk ready for a brush with luxury. The moment I entered, the elegant surroundings didn’t disappoint. It’s a beautiful place, but you didn’t need to hear that from me.

A beautiful welcome from Caudalie

Entrance to the Caudalie Spa

I was sent up to the 4th floor, to the Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa. The lovely treatment director, Régine, greeted me, and I was swept away into a tour. Wow. Everything–everything–is perfect. From the soft aroma to the bowl of grapes on the guest table to the peacefully flowing water fountain to the beautiful employees with perfect skin, I felt as though I was transported to my very own ideal alternate universe. “Can I move in?” I asked one of the employees, to which she gave a warm and polite smile, even though I know she’s heard that question a million times.

They take their vinotherapie very seriously!

A peek inside the spa

Here’s one of the coolest things about the spa: it’s grape themed. Which means — you guessed it — there’s wine. Lots of wine. There’s an entire, beautiful wine lounge featuring bordeauxs to rosés, all served by the spa’s exclusive sommelier. Come, I was beckoned, have a seat, and enjoy some vin. Okay…if you insist.

My own vinotherapie

What I learned, then—from the one and only Mathilde Thomas, owner of the brand—was that grapes have some serious health benefits, whether via drink or skin care. The fruit itself, the seeds, and the stems emit powerful antioxidants (and thus, anti-aging properties), and huge heart-health promoters. So each of the spa’s facials, body treatments, and massages incorporate the grape.

Mathilde Thomas, founder of Caudalie

The Des Vignes fragrance

But Caudalíe’s new fragrance line is a bit unique from the other Caudalíe products—which I learned while eating tapenade and brie and sipping rosé. Its inspiration is the vineyard itself, and more specifically, the scents of the vineyard–the way the vineyard’s aroma shifts at dawn, noon, and dusk. The titles of the three scents convey this: Zeste de Vigne, Fleur de Vigne, and Thé de Vignes.

Caudalie's fragrances

Each fragrance has its own unique notes: Zeste features lemon and bergamot; Fleur, grapefruit and cedar; and Thé, white musk and ginger. The fragrances are so specifc to the hour of day, in fact, that Mathilde suggests picking your scent based on your preferences. Are you a morning person? You’ll probably love Zeste, and so on.

When asked what inspired Mathilde to create a Caudalíe fragrance line, she said, in her exquisite French accent, “I miss my home, Bordeaux, so I decided to bottle it.” Only this time, the bottle holds perfume, not fermented grapes.

**GIVEAWAY ALERT: Want to try one of the fragrances yourself (and win a free facial at the Caudalie Spa in The Plaza Hotel)?? Keep reading, and look out for a Caudalíe giveaway Wednesday!**

Shah Rukh Khan and a crazy fan at IIFA

June 26, 2011

A pic of the crazy fan I mentioned in my previous IIFA highlights post:

IIFA brings on the crazies

This guy literally ran up on stage and took hold of SRK so tight, they needed a whole team to get him off!

BATF Awards for the IIFA’s

The 2011 IIFA Awards

I decided to recap the actual IIFA Awards with my own awards, rounding up of highlights from tonight:

Biggest Beauty Fail: Smeared red lipstick on your teeth when you win your first award for best debut female actress (I’m looking at you, Sonakshi Sinah…and really could it kill someone to let the poor girl know before she gave her giggley speech?).

Sonakshi Sinah's lipstick malfunction

The How-Is-She-Not-Aging? Award: Sridevi. Woman is nearing 50 and can still give girls half her age a run for their money.

Sridevi

Most Dramatic Moment: A crazy uncle fan runs on stage and grabs Shah Rukh Khan’s thigh, professing his love. Dude, if you’re his biggest fan, wouldn’t you know the poor guy just got a fracture on his knee? SRK seemed a little frazzled, but just asked the guy his name and promised him he’d meet him backstage as security took him away. Then he turns to the audience and quipped, “See, that’s the problem…I only have men who are grabbing my thighs!”

Shah Rukh Khan

Eye Candy: It’s a tie between Arjun Rampal and Zayed Khan.

Arjun Rampal

Most touching moment: When Sonu Sood, who won the award for the Best Actor In A Negative Role for Dabaang, said after getting his degree in engineering, he told his mom he wanted to be an actor, and that one day he’ll when he wins an award, he’ll ask her to come on stage to present it to him. He said since then she has passed, but he still feels her presence.

Most Random Presenter: Hilary Swank. She joined Anil Kapoor to present the award for the Best Performance in a Leading Role (Male), greeting the crowd with ‘Namaste, Toronto!‘. When Shah Rukh Khan came on stage to accept the award, he turned to Hilary and said, “You had me at Namaste.”

Ok no, I change my mind…the Ultimate Random Presenter: Cuba Gooding Jr. He came out with Bipasha Basu to present the same award in the female category. After going crazy over how hot Bipasha looked (“YOU.ARE.FINE!!!!”), he tells the audience he’d love to be in a Bollywood movie himself, and proceeds to moonwalk around Bipasha. Or maybe it was a mating dance, not totally sure.

Although she is hot enough that I might have done the same thing...

Bipasha Basu

Best Dance: Priyanka Chopra’s tribute to Asha Bosle for her Lifetime Achievement Award.

Coolest Sighting: A cab tricked out in everything-Bollywood, parked outside the Rogers Centre. It was playing songs from DDLJ, had a myriad Bollywood magazines like Stardust hanging out from its seat pockets, had an indian movie playing on its built-in TVs, and had Indian actresses plastered all over the exterior.

The Real Winner Tonight: Toronto, apparently. I think the city was thanked, praised, and congratulated approximately 5,342* times throughout the night.

Closing the show

OK, it’s 4 AM. I need some sleep!

MAC makeup backstage at the IIFA Awards 2011 – Toronto, Canada

June 25, 2011

Backstage with MAC at the IIFA Awards

MAC Face charts for the IIFA show - 6 different looks in one show

“Tonight’s makeup is a Bollywood celebration with lots of glamour, drama, and color,” says Toronto-based MAC makeup artist Jane McKay backstage at the IIFA Awards. The looks were designed by lead artist Vimi Joshi. “The makeup is not as dramatic as last night’s IIFA Rocks show where the dancers had eyeshadows and rhinestones on their lashes, but it’s equally as beautiful,” says McKay. They kept the top very light reflective and shiny by mixing 4 different glitters to achieve a final green shimmer, but left the lower lash line matte but bold with a teal liner (Tealo) topped with a darker Bottle Green shadow. Here’s a quick run through backstage, and more details that follow!

{Maybe we should have rehearsed that first, ey? Did the best I could in two minutes before rushing out!!}

“When you’re designing makeup for theater, it’s really about high contrast shapes,” said McKay. “You can’t do a soft smoky eye, and make an impact at a distance, especially in this venue.” With a venue as big as Toronto’s Rogers Centre (where the IIFA’s are being held this year), McKay adds that the extra glitz on the eyes will at least keep them from getting totally lost on stage.

A quick guide to the IIFA look:
On face: M.A.C. Fix+ and Full Coverage/Studio Finish
On brows: Dipdown, Silver Dusk and Golden Bronze for highlights
On eyes: Amber Lights (lid), Soft Brown (crease), Blacktrack (top liner) and Tealo liner and Bottle Green (lower lash line). LOTS of Zoom Lash mascara.
On cheeks: Coppertone and Gingerly

The only thing that changes throughout for the 6 performances will be the lip color and bindis, says McKay. Can’t wait to see the dancers take the stage tonight!

PS, we caught Shah Rukh Khan rehearsing with Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza backstage! He was wearing a knee brace but as energetic as ever. What a stud.
