The Impossible Cool

The Impossible Cool is a photography blog I love+follow. It couldn’t have had a more fitting title. It’s a collection account of vintage photographs of serious style icons. Most of the pictures are black and white. I’m not sure why, but I have a strong affinity towards black and white photos (if you’ve ever scoped out my walls in my apartment, you’d know).

I remember once listening to photographer Norman Gershman speak at a gallery in SoHo. He prefers shooting in black and white himself and he said something to the effect of “I find color distracting.” I think there’s some truth in that. In the same way, I find these portraits kind of unfilter something so telling about its subjects. Their style is yes, impossibly cool, but it’s something more–their stance, their eyes, their confidence that seems to translate so purely through the photos. For a while, I feel like the blog had a bit of lull in posting, but it’s finally being updated again so I thought it’d be a great time to share. I’ve already been through the entire thing twice! Here are some more of my favorites:

They just don’t make ’em like that anymore…sigh. Check out the blog’s full collection of the most brilliant portraits: theimpossiblecool.tumblr.com. Who’s your style icon?
