Avril Lavigne designs new Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips!

March 27, 2012

Last night, I was invited to the Crosby Hotel to meet pop star Avril Lavigne for her newest endeavor: designing a limited-edition collection of Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips!

Sitting with Avril Lavigne in her hotel room at the Crosby

As a musician and designer (her clothing line, Abbey Dawn features tees, hoodies, and tanks all stamped with Lavigne’s signature punk rock aesthetic), she’s one who certainly has a distinct style. Which is exactly while Sally Hansen said she was on the top of their list to collaborate with.

Our first peek at the line

Avril came out with a 12-piece collection that is so very…Avril. Skulls, checkers, studs, and stars, she knew exactly how she wanted the nails to look. “I’m always putting these on,” she told us. “I don’t have a lot of time to take care of my nails, so I’ll take these to the studio, put them on in the car, and even on the plane. I even try to put it on some of my guy friends!”

Avril's nails -- a mash up of Headbanger and Beat You to it!

While we sat with her, Lavigne, who was wearing her pink-with-skulls “Headbanger” design, opened a box of her green “Beat You To It!” and started applying right over the first set of her nail strips. “It’s so easy! And this green…you guys totally nailed this color,” she said (no pun intended).

Avril told us when she began designing the nail strips a year ago, she had green ombre highlights in her hair and thought it would look beautiful for nail strips. The silver/teal ombre of “Crowd Surfer” and “Beat You To It!” are her two current favorites! And for her, another plus for the no-dry-time nails: They withstand her constant guitar strumming (not the case with regular nail polish).

The one thing she said she was positive she did NOT want in her designs from the beginning? “Florals!” Not too surprising ;).

Avril's complete new line

Details on her complete line:

Sound Check
– Yellow/black checkers
Take the Stage – Black glitter
Purr-fect Harmony – Purple cheetah print
Headbanger – Pink with black skulls
In the SPOT-light – White with black polka dots
Crowd Surfer – Silver/teal ombre
STUD-io Time – Gray studs
You’re a Star – Blue with black stars
Beat You To It! – Green glitter
Fur-ocious Vocals – Blue/silver leopard print
Plaidical – Red Plaid
Running Wild – Purple zebra print

I couldn’t wait to try them on myself when I got home, and went straight for the black and blue “You’re a Star” (my favorite colors!). The electric blue is UN-Real.

You're a Star

What do you guys think? Do you guys like her designs? Is it what you would have expected from the punk princess?

Avril’s collection is already rolling out to stores, and will be available in April at drug stores and mass merchandisers nationally for $10/pack.

5 ideas on what to do with stale bread (instead of throwing it away)

By Dana Leigh Supnick

I’m a total carb-aholic, and there are few things I love more than fresh, super crusty bread. Yes, I’ve been that girl who orders a second breadbasket, and I’m a total “scarpettaro” – one who uses scarpetta (“little shoe” in Italian), but in this case, refers to a piece of bread you use to sop up every last delicious bite of a saucy dish.

What I would do for a bowl of pasta pomodoro RIGHT NOW….anyway, back to the topic: What do you do with your stale bread? I host dinner and brunch parties pretty regularly, and true to character, I usually have some type of amazing, fresh bread on hand – brioche, baguette, ciabatta, etc. There are always leftovers (bread is still “taboo” for some of my friends), so rather than toss it, I give the bread a second chance!

Waste not, want not! Here are some of my favorite ways to use stale bread

1. Bruschetta or crostinis
– this is the perfect recipe for a leftover baguette! Slice the bread into ¾ inch pieces and arrange on a baking sheet. Use a pastry brush to lightly coat the baguette slices with extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then bake at 400 degrees until lightly toasted. Here is a great recipe for a traditional bruschetta topping from Mario Batali. And crostini toppings…well, you can put just about anything on top of a crostini – Giada De Laurentiis has an amazing Artichoke and Bean Crostini recipe, which I love.

2. Homemade croutons
– making homemade croutons is really easy! Combine olive oil, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese into a mixing bowl (you can also add fresh herbs, like rosemary or thyme if you’d like.) Roughly cut the leftover bread into cubes and toss in the olive oil mixture. Arrange on a rimmed cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees until browned.

Making bread crumbs

3. Homemade bread crumbs
– tear the bread into smaller pieces and toss in a food processor. Process until coarse crumbs form – you don’t want the bread to be like sand, so be sure not to over process. Spread the fresh crumbs evenly on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until dry and browned at 350 degrees. When cooled, toss breadcrumbs with extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container. The bread crumbs will keep for about 3 weeks to one month, and even longer if you store them in the fridge or freezer. The uses for breadcrumbs are endless! Some of my favs: Tuscan Kale Salad, Bucatini with Toasted Bread Crumbs, Macaroni and Cheese. You can even customize your breadcrumbs by adding spices, citrus zests, and fresh herbs.

4. Grilled cheese or french toast
– ‘nuf said

5. Bread pudding
– I am a huge fan of bread pudding, and if you love sweets, this is the ‘stale bread recipe’ for you! Here are some of my favorites: Chunky Apple-Apricot Bread Pudding from Lidia Bastianich, Ina Garten’s French Toast Bread Pudding (great for brunch), Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding, Bread and Butter Pudding from Anne Burrell, who also has a savory Herbed Bread Pudding recipe that is really delicious.

What do YOU do when your bread turns stale??

Review: The MakeUp Show in LA

By Manisha Jogia

I was given the opportunity to go to the The MakeUp Show in LA last weekend. For those of you who don’t know, the show is a two-day event with professional makeup lines, artists, and seminars for people who either work in the field or just love the idea of getting their hands on brand new products-most at a highly discounted rate. I knew it would be fun –what girl doesn’t love makeup??–but I had no idea that it was going to be a makeup wonderland!

The Make Up Show - LA (Photo credit: Louie Heredia)

There were 60 exhibitors and over 4,500 attendees including beauty professionals, educators, buyers, and retail shoppers. I personally do not wear a lot of make up so as I walked around in awe of the excitement of all the shoppers, I was looking to see what stood out to me the most.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (Photo Credit: Louie Heredia)

I was introduced to Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics –a 100% Vegan and cruelty free makeup line. I love the idea of lip gloss and lipstick, but I hate the stickiness of the gloss and the crayon feel of lipstick. It was here I discovered their Lip Tars. It was the lightest thing to ever touch my lips and their colors are to die for. It feels almost like Chapstick and when I say it lasts all day….I really mean it. I put just a drop on my lips (another great thing about the Lip Tars so you aren’t running out every two weeks) at 9:30 am and by the time I got home at 4:00 pm, the color had not worn off. I was sold. I walked away with two (Anime and Grandma) and a couple of eye shadows (Authentic and Hum).

OCC Lip Tars (Photo Credit: Louie Heredia)

Their Lip Tars ran at $10 dollars at the show and their eye shadows were $12. And quite frankly, I would have paid more for the results I was seeing. They had an amazing selection of eye shadows with colors that went on so naturally, it gave the perfect amount of shine to make you feel fabulous, but not too over the top, at any occasion.

The next line that attracted me was Make Up For Ever. Make Up For Ever is a completely professional line that has been around for over 13 years. They mainly cater to celebrities (Kim Kardashian uses their HD concealer) but they have just opened up a store in West Hollywood where they actually offer classes to help you learn how to wear your makeup right! I thought that was so great because I think the reason I don’t wear a lot of makeup is because I personally don’t know what to put where!

Make Up For Ever HD line (Photo Credit: Louie Heredia)

Their line of HD concealers really stood out to me because although it is liquid, it leaves you with an airbrushed look. Its purpose is to not be noticed by even the highest quality of HD cameras so it is no wonder so many celebrities swear by it! Not only that, I found it to be very light on my skin and it did not take much of it all to see results. Plus, no touch ups needed. I LOVE THAT. It is a definite investment.

Mehron was another line that I stumbled across and had to stop and check out [Editor’s note: I LOVE Mehron! Their foundations are amazing!]. Mehron is a Theatrical and Stage makeup line but I found a lot of stuff that could be worn by the everyday woman.

Mehron (Photo Credit: Louie Heredia)

Their newest product is their INtense Pro Pressed Powder Pigments. These are a selection of eye shadows, any color of your choosing, and the best part is, it can also work as a blush AND lip color! That’s right! You can mix and match these babies to make a one-stop shop for your makeup needs. I ended up buying two for myself (Earth Crust and Island Breeze) for 8 dollars each. And just like the other products mentioned, all-day wear.

The last thing I was really concerned with was the brushes. I have one brush that I use for everything and it is probably not the smartest idea. Especially because I have a friend in the makeup industry who is constantly telling me that the brush is what is going to give you results.

Crown Brush (Photo Credit: Louie Heredia)

Crown Brush, another 100% animal cruelty-free line that has been around for over 25 years, had every brush imaginable. And they were selling them for 4 bucks a pop! Most of their brushes are made with real hair and although they have some with synthetic ones (the blonde dyed ones), they all felt very natural and gave me a good clean finish with awesome results. I thought it was the best last stop that I could make!

Over all the MakeUp Show was a blast! It was amazing to watch people learning how to do eyeliners to runway make up. It is a true art and if you ever get a chance to attend one of these things, I highly suggest you do it! I am really excited to start playing around with all the fun products I went home with!
