Recipe: Guacamole

Here’s the thing about guacamole: it’s not difficult to make, but if you mess it up, what is the point of your existence? (This might be totally subjective).

Fresh Avocados from Mexico

Which is why, as simple as the recipe is, I was still intimidated to try it out for the first time for a group of my friends as my Hey-I’m-Bringing dish. But I love guac. And I was also sent three Haas avocados from Avocados from Mexico and thought, “OH. Why not?”

So I looked up “best guacamole recipes ever” on Google and figured from the reviews that Alton Brown’s was the way to go. I even watched his kinda random video before I began.

Ingredients

Anywho. Here are the details:

Total Time: 1 hr 20 min
Prep 20 min
Inactive 1 hr
Yield: 1 batch

Ingredients

3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
1 lime, juiced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 jalapeno chopped (This wasn’t in the written recipe but Alton uses it in the video so I added it in too)
1/2 juice of lemon (also not on the original recipe but squeezed it over at the end to add a little more flavor)

Directions

In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeno, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice (Note: Instead of saving the lime juice and adding in again, I just squeezed a little lemon over it at the end). Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.

My guacamole

It turned out pretty decent. I mean, I ate it all people ate it and that made me happy! My friend Asma also does something magical for breakfast and tops a poached egg over guacamole on toast. It’s quite inspiring. I hope to get to her level some day.

Plus, if you read all the nutritional benefits of avocados (and there are many), you might be eating more guac yourself! And then you can think of me. And that would be awesome.

What are YOUR favorite guacamole recipes? Do you add anything else to your guac?

PS am I just really immature or do you also think of this Austin Powers’ scene when you think of guacaMOLEEEEE?
