Inspiration of the day

I think I’m obsessed with words…beyond what’s normal. Let me explain: I love the way letters look and the beauty in the different scripts. I love how they can evoke different meanings by just a slight slant or certain boldness. There is something very innate in me when it comes to this. Even before I knew how to write, I would scribble little wavy lines on a notepad, imitating cursive the best way I could by occasionally adding little strike-throughs (they were my t’s) and dots (those were i’s). When I did learn to write, I would practice different styles of script. I would look at books and copy calligraphy rather naively, unaware that the beautiful art takes even the most skilled artists years to perfect.

As a little girl, I would be found punching the keys of my dad’s blue typewriter mindlessly; and when we eventually got a computer I was forever searching for ways to download new fonts. I revered each of them in my own way–I couldn’t imagine writing any of my stories without a varied option of letter styles. I would meticulously scroll through the drop menu, trying every one before I found a suitable one for my story that day. In the wise words of Kanye West, “Sometimes I get emotional over fonts.”

It’s funny how these things stay with us. Not until recently when I was admiring word art in different mediums (from graffiti in different countries or even tattoos I see riding the subway), did I realize of how profound a fascination I had with words.

I'm the hero of this story. I don't need to be saved. (via Pinterest)

All of these thoughts were conjured by reflecting on why I stopped to admire a handful of pictures of tattoos online that were all comprised script. I don’t even think I’m crazy about tattoos really and don’t have any myself, but the only ones I’m ever drawn to are ones that are of words.

What’s your inspiration of the day?
