How to: Emily Blunt’s makeup look at the Toronto Film Festival

September 8, 2012

Emily Blunt always keeps it fresh and gorgeous, and her red carpet look at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Looper was no exception. Her makeup artist Jenn Streicher dishes on how to get her ethereal glow:

SKIN

Jenn began by using SK-II Skin Signature Cream and La Mer The Eye Concentrate. She then primed the complexion with Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum, and followed with Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup in shade No. 1.5 Nude. Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer was utilized in two different shades. Jenn used Fair, a light shade, around the nose and as a highlighter, and Pearl, a slightly darker shade, under the eyes.

CHEEKS

Jenn applied Hourglass Superficial Waterproof Bronzer all over the complexion to create a radiant glow. She then used the bronze shade from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset to contour the cheeks and jaw line. The blush shade from Illume was dabbed onto the cheekbones, over which was layered Hourglass Aura Sheer Cheek Stain in Petal, a peachy pink tone, on the apples of the cheeks.

EYES

She started by tracing the eyes with MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee and blended the color out. The smoky eye statement came care of Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy: the shell shimmer shade was applied up to the brow bone and the copper shimmer shade embellished the lids and below the eyes. Jenn then heightened the eyes with Hourglass Script Precision Liquid Liner, which is small enough to work between the lashes. She finished up with Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara for voluminous lashes.

LIPS

All that was required was an application of Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Canvas, a soft rose beige shade. The velvety matte lip color, new for fall, delivers richly pigmented and long-lasting coverage – withstanding a film screening and an after-party.

MTV VMAs: How to get Taylor Swift’s look

September 7, 2012

Taylor Swift wanted her red carpet look to be inspired by her new album, Red, so makeup artist Lorrie Turk obliged (and beautifully so!). She gave us tips on how to get her look:

Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs 2012

FACE

CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation was buffed in with a damp sponge, leaving a dewy even finish. CoverGirl Fresh Complexion Under-Eye Concealer was lightly patted on with a fingertip to brighten up the area under her eyes. Since her eyes and lips were strong, we wanted just a hint of color on her cheeks. I dusted CoverGirl Classic Color Blush in Soft Mink lightly along her cheekbones.

EYES

I brushed on Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Champagne from her lash line to the crease, concentrating the color in the inner corners of her eyes for sparkle. In the eye crease and slightly above, I brushed another eyeshadow in Tapestry Taupe, which is a great color to add a bit of warmth to the eyes without adding too much color.

For the defined bold eyeliner, I used CoverGirl LineExact Liquid Liner. Starting at the inner corners of her eyes, I drew outward to the end of the eyes, going from thin to thicker with the liner and flicked up when reaching the end of the eye to create a cat-eye look. On the lower lash line, I used a damp detailer brush dipped in eyeshadow Brown Smolder and brushed it into the lower lash line for a less-defined line on the bottom. I finished the eyes with LashBlast Fusion Mascara.

LIPS

Using a lip brush, LipPerfection Lipcolor in Hot was applied to her lips for a perfect bold red mouth.

Et voila!

Local NY beauty primping spots I love

September 5, 2012

Ah. Finally back from vacation, and just before my whirlwind trip I realized there are plenty of places in the city I go to for primping that I thought would be nice to list in one post:

For a blowout…visit Blow (342 W 14th St, btw 14 St & 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014). I went here for the first time before my trip looking for a blowout that will last til the first wedding festivity (which would be two days after touching down on the west coast!). A tall order, but Erin over here made it happen. After 45 minutes in her chair, I had volume and waves that lasted through two flights and a car ride down to the wedding. Blow outs start at $40 (for my medium length hair, it was $50 so it depends on hair type).

not me.

For a haircut, visit…Chris. He was at Medulla, but now at Brush (9 E. 19th St (Between 5th and Broadway). He’s been my go-to for a while now and I loveee his precise cuts (his resume speaks for itself — he’s also worked at Bumble & Bumble and Rita Hazan!). Also, I’ve always loved Pich at Warren-Tricomi at the Plaza if you want more options!

Satori (photo via Yelp)

For laser hair removal, visit…Satori or Pulse Laser Center. I found both of these through deal websites, but they’ve both been amazing. Satori has the most wonderful, friendly staff and they use an advanced Candela laser, which has a cooling system after you’re zapped so it’s less painful. Pulse Laser Center also has a great staff and clean facilities. Prices vary, but I’ve had great results at both places! (Tip: if you haven’t already, sign up for Living Social, Groupon, Bloomspot, and Lifebooker…they have deals to these places that come up now and again!)

For waxing, visit…Uni.K Wax (553 Third Ave. at 37th St., NY, NY 10016, 212-481-2777). Been going here for years as well. Clean place (no double-dipping and they use a new wax pot for every client). My personal favorite waxers here are Jasmine or Tabby. Friends also swear by the most painless waxes by Natasha at J’Aime Day Spa (179 Madison, 2nd Flr, btw 33rd and 34th, 212-684-4466) if you want another option!

For eyebrow threading, visit…Perfect Shape (various locations, although I go to the one on 1030 6th Ave, 2nd Flr, NY, NY 100011, 212-929-3229). Rachel Roy personally recommended this place to me and she has the most ridiculously beautiful brows so I had to oblige. Her girl is the owner, Reshma, but I’ve had a different threader every time and haven’t had a bad experience yet. Eyebrow threading is $7.

For nails…visit Polished Beauty Bar. If not for owner, Susan Nam’s, company alone. I have to admit I’m pretty bad at getting regular manicures or pedicures, but I did come back here to get a Shellac French manicure since they rocked it last time. In case you’re wondering, this is how my nails look exactly one week after getting them Shellac’d at Polished (through beach lounging, and weddings galore…yes I just took a pic of them right now with my phone!):

Shellac French Manicure a la POLISHED BEAUTY BAR

There ya go. Takes an army just to look half-decent these days, eh? Anyway, just thought I’d shout out a few of my faves. Anyone else have recommendations? Always looking for the best new places!
