SNL Starbucks skit. Genius.

January 23, 2013

I’ve had multiple people send this to me saying it reminds them of my Starbucks’ problems (follow me on Instagram for reference), so figured I should share…SNL hit the nail on the head with this one!:

Panther Coffee in Wynwood – Miami, FL

January 19, 2013

Panther Coffee

I admit, New Yorkers can get snobby about their coffee. But I was pretty confident when Shahla told me about Panther Coffee, she knows what she was talking about (this is the same girl whose AOL screen name was Jiva Jaava for the longest time, people).

.

She took me to the Wynwood area — a mostly gentrified area of warehouses that has been pretty much taken over by world renowned graffiti artists. It’s now galleries and museums and a favorite spot for photoshoots. And of course, a serious cup of coffee.

A work of art.

The coffee roasters here are java purists. They, in fact, roast their coffee on site.

It’s not the norm to specially request your coffee ‘light and sweet’ — just leave it to them to exact that latte for you and trust me, you’re left with a full-bodied, satisfying caffeine boost for the day.

Beauty on the Streets: Lilit Caradanian

January 18, 2013

This week’s spotlight is on makeup guru, Lilit Caradanian of Lilit’s Makeup Studio in Sherman Oaks, CA. I came across her first on Instagram, where she shares gorgeous shots from her studio and helpful makeup tutorials. Read on to learn more about what makes her tick: -Shy

.

Name: Lilit Caradanian

Occupation: Makeup Artist/Business Owner

Location: Sherman Oaks, CA

Website: MakeUpbyLilit.com / LilitsMakeupStudio.com

Twitter: @MakeUpbyLilit

Instagram: @MakeUpbyLilit

“My goal is to never stop moving, to never get comfortable and to always make new goals. I specialize in weddings and bridal parties, but I also teach and own a makeup studio/school. I’ve been in the industry for 12 years now, and also working on starting my own swimsuit covers (LeRush) that will be available starting March.”

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I think is: “How am i going to organize my day?”

The song I have on repeat right now is: B.o.B – Chandelier

Growing up, I really wanted to be: I never really knew. I got my degree in sociology and Masters in business because I knew no matter what career I fell into, these were the two things that would help me greatly.

The best part about being a makeup artist is: Meeting so many people!

My best beauty tips is: Don’t try and look like someone else–it wont be your best look.

People usually compliment my: Eyes, because I’m always doing tutorials on myself.

I’ll never forget: I almost got stuck in San Fransisco when I had a bridal party to do at 6 am. Mini-heart attack.

For my skin, I use: Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser and Deep Pore Cleansing Masque because I have oily skin and it deeply cleans the pores. I also love their Pore Minimizing Lotion during the day, and Josie Maran Argan Oil at nights.

My favorite place in the whole world is: Europe! The history which LA lacks. Everything here is modernized.

Current beauty product obsession: Kevyn Aucoin Liquid Airbrush Foundation. Gives you an amazing glow without the oily aftermath.

But I also can’t live without: Beautyblender! Best blending product ever created.

Worst habit: Being too much of a perfectionist. One project may take me forever because of it!

My favorite scent is:By Kilian Good Girl Gone Bad

People might be surprised to know that: I cannot gain weight for the life of me. No matter what I do and what I eat, I don’t gain weight. [Editor note: Jealous]

My current favorite hair product is: Oribe Dry Texturing Hair Spray.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: Sweets. I live and breathe sweets.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Mantee Cafe in Studio City, CA. You have to try their traditional mantee!

Though I can make a mean: Baked ziti.

I hope in 5 years: Have a family of my own and possibly my own line of products!

Who inspires me: My dad. His creativity and ambition is endless.

Dinner at Yardbird – Miami Beach, FL

Yardbird Southern Table and Bar (pic via website)

Mason jar light decor at Yardbird

It’s a given that when I’m visiting my friend Shahla in Miami, she’s going to introduce me another restaurant that I’m going to crave as soon as I leave. I was FAMISHED when I touched down in Florida a couple days ago and when she was throwing out options, I was decidedly in the mood for some Southern comfort food. Actually, I’m always decidedly in a Southern comfort food mood, but I eat other cuisines for variety sake. Anyway, so went my meeting with Yardbird Southern Table and Bar.

Ambiance

Ambiance

What you can expect: dishes made from scratch, decadent, and rich flavors with fresh farm-to-table ingredients. Co-owner Jeff McInnis (of Top Chef finals fame) teamed up with two local restaurateurs, Chris Romero and John Kunkel to achieve just that. Complete with long communal tables or cozy booths, it turned out to be a pick for my first night in Miami with Shals and our friend Shireen. The hardest part was deciding WHAT to order when you have options like big ol’ cheddar waffles, pan seared fish, and of course, fried chicken. We decided it would be hard to go wrong with their Butter Bean Risotto (with grilled hen of the woods mushrooms and winter park tomme cheese), Shrimp n’Grits (Florida shrimp, Adluh South Caroline stone ground grits, minus the ham), and Chicken under a Brick (Carolina poulet rouge, fresh rosemary, local lemon, brussels sprouts, fresh tomatoes and okra):

The risotta from start to finish proved flavorful, rich (strong on their butter and sauteed onions, and the mushroom made a nice side too); and the other dishes didn’t disappoint either. I took half my dish to go but could barely control myself from finishing the rest after I got back to Shahla’s apartment. With all the savory foods though, we couldn’t help but gorge on dessert too. We went for the pecan pie…and did justice to devouring it a few minutes later.

Not to mention, the service and staff were really attentive, with the manager and our waiter checking in often and making sure everything was on point. Either Miami is really stepping its food game, or I’ve been missing out on some delicious places here!

Happy patrons

Travel essentials: The Perez Beauty Case is the best thing to happen to me.

January 17, 2013

I’m not what you would call…the most organized of peoples. I hate to admit that, but there are many layers of “organized chaos” in my life. People think I’m joking when I dedicate almost all my Friday nights to just cleaning out my closet– without it ever completely being done. It’s a big priority for me every weekend though. So you can iamgine how my makeup stash(es) look like. I finally resigned to having a random bag just dedicated to traveling so I won’t have to pack and re-pack my makeup for every trip, but it usually ends up a mountain of a mess where I can’t find jack when I need it. Recently, however, I’ve been introduced to a game-changer: Mocha Moon’s Perez Beauty Case. You just have to see to understand:

CHARITY - Fashion

Birthday beginnings…

January 15, 2013

I’m so sorry for the dead air on here. First it was the holidays, then I fell deathly sick with the flu (it got me bad) and after being away for so long, it’s so hard to figure out where to begin. I felt like my birthday might be most appropriate :).

First, thank you all for the tweets, texts, calls, fb messages on my birthday. I’m always overwhelmed and so touched by the people who reach out and make the day more special. Whereas last year, I had similar reflections but felt like I embraced my birthday in a very different way, I wanted to make this one count in a more selfless way. On a serious note, there was so much negativity going on in this world towards the end of the year — the shootings, the rapes, the violence — that I started reflecting on how I can do something on my birthday to ‘give back’ in whatever little way. Mostly because I was feeling grateful…when normally it’s so easy to get caught up in what’s not going right to ignore all that you have, I was feeling spoiled. There are so many tremendous people in my life, all thanks to God…this was a time I didn’t want to lose sight of all of those things.

A couple weeks before my birthday, I came up with an idea to use my wall of the normal ‘happy birthday’ facebook posts and translate that to how much I’d donate to charity. It’s a small gesture, but the point was every single person is in my life for a reason and every single person i come across inspires me in some way. I wanted some sort of measured way to show how grateful I am. And quite simply, fb was just the easiest place to track where people come together so that’s why I decided to go that route.

1:Face Watch for Cancer

Anyway, I started researching charities to donate to and was overwhelmed. What makes once cause more significant than the other? I know there’s no answer to that, but maybe there was a way to donate to several causes. I put out that thought on Twitter, and I was pointed to 1:Face Watch by my friend Mufti. I thought it was a really cool concept: you can buy their watches and based on the color you purchase, you are donating to a specific cause: Hunger, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Environment, Water.

I decided this could work in two folds: I buy a bunch of watches to help these causes, and then distribute the watches to friends to help raise awareness for each. But I’m also wondering if it’s better to donate directly to a charity instead. Or do half and half? Either way, I’d love to get some feedback on what you think would be the most effective way to give back, or even a charity you think would be a good place to donate to.

Thanks so much for your help, and again, thanks for making this birthday so special :).
