New Spa Alert: The gorgeous Klara Beauty Lab in the UES

March 16, 2013

Facial room at Karla Beauty Lab

For a truly bespoke facial, you have no excuse not to visit Klara’s Beauty Lab in the Upper East Side. The brand new medi-spa only opened a month ago, but you would have never known — this spa was completely well-thought out from a beautifully-finished decor to their signature services and all thanks to its brainchild, owner Klara Chrzuszcz. I went the very next day after the crazy winter storm by the name of Nemo, and was by far the most luxurious experience I’ve had yet.

Snack while you wait...

Klara, the petite, doll-like owner was right there to greet me with an ear-to-ear smile when I walked in her spa. She was, I couldn’t help but note, outfitted to match the mint-green furnishings of her space in the most stylish of ways. She seemed too hip to be my facialist!

Credentials

But if you have any doubt, they are almost running out of room to hang all the wall-to-wall certificates of her credentials.

After taking a peek at the plastered walls (all done by Klara herself), and cozy rooms (the massage room even has the most hi-tech shower to use right after), I was asked to take my place in the facial room.

I was told the facial could take a couple hours and I was already wondering how I could sit idle for that long, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. After taking a brief survey of my skin concerns, following a test to see how hydrated my skin is, Klara went to work. Since the treatment is so customized, what I had done may not be what the next person needs. Regardless, Klara concocted a special procedure, switching from cleansers, to a hydra-derm abrasion (micro derm but with water), microcurents, oxygen infusion, brushing on masks, a chemical peel, following with potent serums with hyaluronic acid and polypeptides, and even elements of reiki (Japanese stress-relieving methods Klara is well trained in). The time flew by much faster than I had anticipated and I emerged from the room glowing. There is definitely magic in her fingers.

.

There was no sense of rushing me out. Klara talked to me about diet, advised me to take vitamin C pills to help sustain the brightening effects of the facial (I listened and bought a bottle right after at my local drugstore). There was no product pushing, no hasty goodbyes…even though I would expect that after hearing that an A-list Hollywood celebrity booked her appointment right after me. I felt kinda special and walked out practically floating.

The spa offers her fully-customized facials for $250 (goes up depending on what services you get…these are UES’er prices but worth its weight). Other services include massages ($80 and up), and waxing ($20 and up). To book an appointment, call 212-390-0239 or visit their website at klarabeautylab.com. Tell them I sent ya, you WON’T be disappointed.

Hmm who would want to win a special treatment to this spa? Wanted to hear your feedback first 😉

Fave restaurant alert: Dinner at ABC Kitchen

March 15, 2013

ABC Kitchen, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

ABC Kitchen

1. The rustic and warm settings, beautiful light fixtures and placement, cozy wooden furnishings, and mismatched antique plates gives me a peaceful escape from the bustling city outside.

.

.

2. Your fresh, farm-to-table, organic, gorgeous food keeps me coming back for more (note: I can’t wait for you to bring back that seasonal juicy, organic strawberry salad back!).

.

.

.

3. THIS Roasted Kabocha Squash Toast. I didn’t even know what kabocha was, but I learned from your flannel-wearing waitress that it’s a winter squash that tastes like heaven. Paired with ricotta and apple vinegar cider, it’s perfection (trust me on this, and order this for sure!)

Roasted Kabocha

4. Your healthy food options that make me feel like I’m a better person overall, or at least a little more conscious about slightly surpressing my inner-fat girl urges when I dine with Cali natives like Sadia and Mehran. Mehran works out before and after dinner and often brings his gym bag to place on the designated chair next to him. Sadia is a regular kickboxer (you may also find her doing strange plies and other ballerina-esque split moves at the gym while holding her phone in safe distance, but don’t ask why). She also carries a bottle of water wherever she goes. In comparison, I like to pre-game with pizza and stare at the ceiling thinking about how much food I’m going to consume while I count down the minutes to dinner.

Lentil soup with celery root, parmesan and herbs

Roast carrot and avocado salad

5. And then I order more pizza. But I digress…

Mushroom, parmesan, oregano, and farm egg pizza on whole wheat. Might be too mushroomey and too gooey for everyone's taste.

6. The cheeseburger is one that only a friend like Mehran can mess up by ordering with jalapenos on the side. WHO puts jalapenos on the side? The rosemary fries though were beyond perfection, and even such an insolent patron as he could not mess this up.

Akaushi cheeseburger with herbed mayo and jalapenos (except, not this one)

7. THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS. Do any of you understand how much I LOVE brussels sprouts? I legit fantasize about them throughout the day, and ABC is another culprit as to why. I’m a horrible person and fake offer these to people, which after they have their bite, I carry on to inhale the rest. As I did that night..cooked to perfection on a bed of chipotle-type mayo sauce.

Brussels Sprouts

Mayhaps the only time we were underwhelmed was dessert: The apple pie with cinnamon ice cream wasn’t special or memorable enough (maybe warming the apple pie part would help) but we at least got our sweet fix in.

Apple pie

This place is quite special. Jean-Georges, we tip our hat to you.

Guys, please take your girl on a date here. Profess your love, propose to her, do something here. Even if she says no*, you know at least dinner won’t disappoint.

*If this is likely, save all thoughts until after the meal.

European Wax Center’s purple wax

March 14, 2013

Folks, it’s that time again where I tell you about another amazing spa find for your waxing needs: European Wax Center. At this point, I’m just amazed at how many different types of wax and methods you can come across in one city. Note, previous places I’ve raved about: Strip: Ministry of Waxing and Uni.K.Wax where I’m a regular. The purple gourmet hard wax though that you find here though is something else.

Comfort Wax

Their trademark Comfort Wax is imported from Paris (fwancy), made of 100% natural beeswax. And their method ensures a practically painless experience. First they cleanse the area, then use a pre-wax oil to ensure the wax stick to the hair – not skin. When they’re applying the wax, there’s absolutely no double-dipping…they’ll literally use a brand new sanitary wooden spatula every time they apply the wax on you. They finish up with a dose of their Ingrown Hair Serum to prevent bumps and breakouts.

Columbus Ave location

The best part? There was no sting or even a trace of sticky wax afterwards. Oh, and more incentive to check it out: Women get a complimentary bikini line, underarm or eyebrow wax just for the first time. Men can get in on this too with a free eyebrow, ear or nose wax. Plus, they have 429 locations sprawled across the country, but if you happen to be in NYC and you happen to go to their salon in the UWS on Columbus Ave., ask for Meredith. She’s a dream.

Maybelline New York goes electric!

March 13, 2013

Just another day playing with nail polish.

Maybelline Color Me Electric

Maybelline New York just released their brand new, limited-edition Color Goes Electric line and it’s available only this month! Thought I’d give you a preview:

Blast of Blue

So all this nail art that have been popping up has been magnifying my own ineptness to come up with fun designs. Thus, I thought I’d try to distract you all instead with the new iPhone case I got my roomie from Caseable (they handcraft electronic cases straight from Brooklyn!).

This case: Meditation ABC by Kaitlyn Parker

THEN I decided I’d at least try to do something fancy with Alluring Rose and Coral Glow (which, PS, was also the official color of NYFW!):

Alluring Rose x Coral Glow

All the formulas are formaldehyde, DBP, and toluene-free, and (best part) cost $4 at drugstores. Which basically means you can get all 10 shades without hating yourself afterwards.

Sultra Beauty bright color hair extensions

March 12, 2013

I had a plan (never executed) to dye my hair a dark black onyx (that had a tinge of midnight blue). Once I grew out of my subliminal goth urges, I never quite re-visited this blue hair fantasy…well, until today.

Blue on top of ombre ;)

I just found out about Sultra Beauty’s 100% 14″ Indian Remy clip-on hair extensions ($9, available at sephora.com). Let me highlight clip-on for the non-committal. Of course, I went straight for the Lapis Blue. For a bright shock of color, the extensions blend in beautifully, with just a slight peek of your chosen hue in between your own natural strands. Fair warning: it will also somehow make you wanna go to Ultra this weekend. Want something that blends even more? Check out their color hair mascara ($24) (comes in pink, red, blue, and violet).

Girl tattoos boy’s name on her face after first date

March 11, 2013

Ok this is a result of the excessive Google’ing I have to do at work (and hence tunnels I fall into on YouTube as well). BUT. Have you guys seen this story last month about a girl who tattooed a guy’s name on her face — after the first date? And to make matters even weirder, the boyfriend is a tattoo artist who inked her himself. What’s more, the man who’s name she now bears is also the infamous tattoo artist who was accused of tattooing 56 stars on another young Belgian girl’s face after she fell asleep when she only asked for 3 (she was later found to be lying). But you HAVE to see this tattoo…it’s no small little scribble:

File under weird news story of the day. I just don’t understand anything anymore. Thoughts? Repulsions? Share.
