Breakfast/Brunch - FOOD - "The Delicious" - French

A Gentlemen’s Brunch at Amélie

By Bilal Mohammad

Said Gentlemen

I’m fasting this month in observance of Ramadan, so I’ve had to forgo my favorite my meal of the day: brunch. In remembrance of the glorious days when I could meet up with my boys for a midday feast following a 12-hour slumber, I will review one of our favorite spots, Amélie, which is located on 8th street between 5th avenue and MacDougal Street.

Ginger lemonade

I was surprised to arrive at the spot around noon on a Sunday and be seated immediately. The décor was definitely retro (our chairs were movie theater seats that had obviously been uprooted from their original locations). After we were done marveling at the duck breast and chicken liver on the menu (the place is definitely French), we decided upon the following: Eggs Norwegian, French Toast with Berries, Amélie Omelet with Homefries, and Homemade Ginger Lemonade.

Eggs Norwegian

French Toast with Berries

Amélie Omelet with Homefries

The food is as delicious as it looks. The eggs were seasoned perfectly and all the fruit was fresh (I hate when places serve you bad fruit!) The meal was prepared extremely well and we left full, happy, and satisfied. The real treat of the meal was definitely the ginger lemonade. The fizzy, sour-sweet concoction was very refreshing and definitely unique. I also think that going to this place won us some brownie points with all the hipster girls at NYU who cite Amélie as their favorite movie, ever.

Throwback Tuesday: Sofia Vergara and NERVO at CoverGirl’s Summer Beauty REMIX party

July 30, 2013

A couple months ago, I got a chance to check out CoverGirl’s Summer Beauty Remix party where in attendance were some of their famous spokeswomen: Sofia Vergara and DJ sisters NERVO!

Here are some more sights from the night:

The party also featured a bunch of CoverGirl’s newest offerings, like their Flamed Out collection, in which I found a new favorite: COVERGIRL Flamed Out Pencils! Their Ashen Glow Flame (335) pencil is to die for. Just a little of Ashen Glow Flame and CoverGirl’s black eyeliner on the lids and you have the easiest bright eye look for the night:

The fact that it doesn’t crease and lasts forever is just a bonus. COVERGIRL Flamed Out Pencils are available for $6, and Perfect Point Plus Eye Liner is available for $5 at mass retailers.

Denise Richards shares her beauty secrets as new spokesperson for OROGOLD Cosmetics

July 29, 2013

If skincare is decadent, consider Orogold the pinnacle. Their line is exclusively infused with 24K pure gold — that means all their products from their cleansers to their masks to their serums all contain the precious element. And if their blinged out packaging doesn’t drive the point home, their price points do reflect, if you will, just that: $800 moisturizers to $1,500 serums (although on the low end, you can find some closer to $250. Yes, that’s the low end here).

Denise Richards officially opening the OROGOLD store on 57th Street

According to the company, “Gold has [long] been recognized for its luxurious and beautifying properties. Historians have long maintained that Cleopatra slept in a gold mask every night to enhance her captivating beauty. In ancient Rome, gold salves were used for of a variety of skin problems.” One celeb who found her Holy Grail skin regimen in their products is the company’s newest spokesperson: Denise Richards. Richards arrived at Orogold’s newest prime location in NYC on 57th Street last week for the official opening and to speak — what else — luxurious skincare. And I can attest to the fact that in person, the 42-year-old mother of three looks as fresh as a young and bright-eyed 25-year-old. Not fair. At least she shares how she keeps her skin looking firm and young:

Denise Richards at the Orogold store opening in NYC

On why she decided to partner with OROGOLD: “I’ve been approached by other skin are lines, and I wouldn’t endorse something I can’t use. OROGOLD is a truly a wonderful brand, using minerals that benefit the skin. They use 24k Gold, Diamond Dust, Mother of Pearl, and other vitamins and minerals, all of which work together so I can really see the results. I was so impressed the first time I came to the store and used the products, and really feel a difference in my skin since using them. I’ve gotten many compliments on my skin since using the products. ”

On what types of foods she eats to benefit her skin
: “I’m all about a clean and healthy lifestyles filled with lots of fruits and veggies. I always notice when I eat too much sugar, it’ll show up [to the detriment] of my skin. I like to have a lot of olive oil and avocados. I have dry skin, so I eat a lot of things to keep it moisturized and try to not break out.”

On how she got her toned arms
: “Honestly, the biggest thing that made them so toned is carrying around my daughter! And pilates.”

On what beauty tips she’ll share with her daughters
: “They’re so young, I just want them to protect their skin on the beach. And I’ll definitely teach them that the best thing for us is sleep and water.”

When asked on how often she gets facials
: “Not as often as I like! I used to go once a month, but as a busy mom, it doesn’t always happen. I try to do stuff at home because I don’t have a lot of time. My favorite product in the line is the Tèrmica Energizing Mask, which warms as you us it. It helps with collagen and anti-aging. I can really feel it working to help tighten my skin and get rid of impurities. Also, the Vitamin C collection is just a great basic collection, the serum is not heavy and leaves my skin feeling great.”

One of Richards' favorite products: The $600 Tèrmica Energizing Mask

Curious to ask you all: Denise Richards swears by it but would you guys spend for a skincare in the 100s of dollars?

Popbar (did someone say hot chocolate on a stick?)

July 28, 2013

By Bilal Mohammad

Inside Popbar

Every year, usually sometime at the end of July and the beginning of August, the magical excitement that the summer brings, with its promise of warm weather and carefree days, wears off and I begin to long for the nippy days of autumn and winter. I love walking outside without having to worry about crossing to the shady side of the street and taking the subway without emerging a sweaty beast. Many of you probably think I’m crazy for wishing away the last leg of your favorite season, but I suspect some of you sympathize with this sentiment. Popbar, located on the corner of Carmine Street and 6th avenue, has something to offer for all of you.

Popbar’s niche is making gelato popsicles, which, when you see them in the window, will have you drooling. For those of you looking for a cool summer treat, this place has a wide variety of flavors (Pumpkin pie! Blood orange! Kiwi!) and toppings that you can choose from. Craft your ideal popsicle and enjoy!

So much to choose from...

Hot chocolate on a stick!

For those of you partial to hot drinks, cold weather, and chocolate, Popbar’s hot chocolate on a stick is a MUST-TRY. You will be served a cup of steamed milk with their signature “hot chocolate on a stick,” which a bar of rich, heavenly tasting chocolate that you mix in yourself.

Mixing chocolate in milk

I chose the hazelnut chocolate (you can also choose milk, dark, or white). After the chocolate has been melted and mixed, you will have a cup of the most decadent hot chocolate you’ve ever had.

4 Tips to control the frizz from Dove celeb stylist, Matt Fugate

July 24, 2013

I recently got to catch up with the ever affable celeb stylist Matt Fugate at Glamour and Dove’s Great Hair Affair event in NYC, where stylists were on hand to give people blow outs right in the middle of Times Square.

The Great Hair Affair in NYC

Dove Hair Affair in Times Square

They used Dove’s Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner on me, which contains a Pro-Moisture complex that goes to the cellular level of hair to give it weightless hydration to each strand. It did wonders to fight the normal humidity-induced frizz I would have been dealing with that day. Which made me wonder, What are some practical ways to not look like a total fur-ball during these warmer months? Matt, who’s worked with the likes of Blake Lively and January Jones, gave me some easy tips on how to beat the frizz:

1) Don’t dry your hair in the bathroom.
“There’s too much humidity after you shower and blow drying your hair there is counterproductive to trying to smooth it out with your dryer,” he says. If you can, Fugate suggests doing it somewhere where there isn’t any steam – your bedroom or family room perhaps.

2) Use something that will seal your cuticle down.
Something that’s super lightweight but with a ton of moisture, says Fugate. (Try Dove Nourishing Oil Care Leave-In Smoothing Cream.)

3) When you’re blowing out your hair, make sure you’re always blowing out from root to ends.
Fugate suggests rough drying it til it’s half dry, then use a nozzle to stream the air from top to bottom in a swift motion.

4) If you don’t have time to blow dry, tie your hair in a loose braid.
“If you want your hair to dry without the frizz, you have to get your hair to dry together,” he says. A loose braid ensures the hair is always roped around itself and not all over the place. After it dries, you can let it down for a pretty wave. Another option is to tie it lightly (so there’s no creases) in a loose ponytail with a cool accessory like a piece of leather. That way, you’re still keeping the hair together as it’s drying.

How do you beat the frizz in the summer?

Dove Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner are available at mass retailers for $5 each. Visit to be entered daily to win prizes like Amazon gift cards, movie tickets, a year subscription to Glamour and more! Here are some more fun hair facts from Dove!
