Beauty on the Streets: Makeup artist Michele Carrillo

Picking this week’s Beauty on the Streets was a no-brainer. I met Michele on a shoot I did recently, and fell in love with her work. She’s a true artist and unbelievably talented (plus she comes from a family of chefs!). Here are some of her favorite things! -Shy

.

Name: Michelle Carrillo

Age: As a woman in the beauty industry….that’s a question you never get an answer to 😉

Occupation: Makeup Artist

Location: NYC

Website: michelecarrillo.wix.com/makeupbymichele

Twitter/Instagram: @makeupbymichele

“One of my fave moments as a makeup artist was a few months ago when I keyed the makeup for a charity gala here in NYC for Betsey Johnson that benefited WEP (Women’s Education Program). Working alongside such an iconic figure for a great cause and having the honor of doing her makeup was truly a highlight for me in my ten-year career in the beauty industry. She really is as fun and high energy as what you’ve seen. When she did her cartwheel and split on stage, I was like a giddy 15-year-old all over again!”

My style is: Upper East Side princess gets in a fight with Williamsburg hipster. Winner unclear.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Heart beats by Johnnyswim. Fun fact: I recently had the opportunity to do makeup/hair on Johnnyswim‘s Amanda Sudano for an event here in NYC where she and her husband were performing. I instantly fell in love with them as a couple, and of course, as singers. They are extremely talented, yet so down to earth and I can’t wait to see them reach the success they deserve!

Growing up, I really wanted to be: well…a makeup artist. However, a a news reporter was a close second.

The best part about being a makeup artist: are those moments when you make someone not only look but also feel just that much more beautiful.

My best beauty tip is: to take care of your skin before adding lots of makeup to it in order to camouflage imperfections. Weekly exfoliating, masking and daily moisturizing is vital in order to obtain great skin and therefore, great makeup.

People usually compliment my: long hair. It’s all mine but I always get asked if I’m wearing extensions.

I’ll never forget: having the opportunity to see legends in person such as Michael Jackson, Madonna and most recently Cher. Living in New York definitely has its perks! Seeing Cher perform from 10 feet away and having her makeup artist come on stage to touch her up was a priceless moment for me! Moments like those motivate me to push harder knowing there is so much more I want to achieve in this industry.

For my skin, I use: different products during different times of the year. My summer regimen is completely different from my winter one! Currently, in these warmer months I’m using La Prairie‘s new line for oily skin and I love it! It’s oil controlling, pore minimizing and brightening.

My favorite place in the whole world is: anywhere near or on the water. I’ve always loved being on the beach especially when it’s a little empty. I find it so calming and serene to simply listen to the waves crash. My favorite beach thus far has been in St. Thomas. I can’t wait to go back!

Current beauty product obsession: Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancers. Just a tiny drop gives the most flawless finish and completes any beauty look.

But I also can’t live without: My Beautyblender and Lancome Hypnose Drama Full Body Volume Mascara. Both are essentials not only in my professional kit but also my personal one.

Worst habit: Twirling my hair. I try to control the twirling when in public or at least in professional environments (haha!), but if I’m stressed or simply trying to figure something out it’s like I go into twirl-mode and there’s no stopping it. Hey, it could be worse!

When I travel, I MUST have: my headphones, a blanket and socks. I always get so cold on flights!

My favorite scents are: Juicy Couture Couture in the summer, and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb the rest of the year.

People might be surprised to know that: I’m originally from Louisiana. Born and raised, and eventually I plan to return to the South.

My current favorite hair product is: my T3 SinglePass Whirl and Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: chocolate covered strawberries. Two of my absolute favorites rolled up into one — what’s not to like?!

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Que Rico! Cuban Cafe. It’s a small restaurant owned by my sister in Louisiana but it’s all my favorite childhood dishes and every time I go visit I just can’t get enough.

Though I can make a mean: lean burrito with fresh guacamole on the side. Mmmm.

I hope in 5 years: have accomplished most of my career goals and am ready to focus more on my personal life somewhere warm, year round.

Who inspires me: My mother. I know it sounds cliché, but she is truly such an admirable person. She has an amazing sense of self and sense of humor. She looks for the good in everyone and is just as in love with my father as she was when they first met, nearly 40 years ago.
