Wedding Hair tips from celebrity stylist Mark Townsend

August 12, 2013

Holy Facebook Newsfeed, everyone’s getting married! Congrats to all the newly engaged :). In the spirit of wedding fever, I got some great tips from celebrity stylist, Mark Townsend (the go-to hair guru for the likes of Lea Michele, Jennifer Lawrence, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen), on some trendy hair do’s for your big ‘I do’ (horrible pun).

Top knots are a trend that just won’t quit. - Mark Townsend

  • Been growing your hair before your wedding? Don’t be a bride with fuzzy split-ends. “Schedule a trim three weeks before your cut, which leaves plenty of time for tweaks.
  • Tiny colored accents—whether it’s a crystal barrette, or a colored bobby pin—are everywhere. Use them as your something blue, or as a fun, subtle way to match your bridesmaids.”
  • “A face-framing tendril or a few pieces around the face look great in pictures—but can get limp and sweaty on the dance floor. Rather than tucking behind your ear, twist and pin with a bobby pin to keep them cutely off your face.”
  • “Wedding day updos need to stay in place long after you say ‘I do.’ For extra security, spritz hairpins with Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo. It gives them a subtle matte finish that helps them stay put through cocktails, cake and the electric slide.”
  • “If your hair isn’t naturally curly and you’re worried about spirals loosening up on the dance floor, hit the hairspray before and after styling. Misting a hairspray like Dove’s Style+Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray onto each section before wrapping sections around a curling iron will really lock in the shape.
  • Top knots are a trend that just won’t quit, and they’re perfect for walking down the runway or the aisle. It’s a great way to elongate your neck, or show off a really elegant or ornate dress.”
  • “Is your hair color-treated? Don’t wait until the last minute to get a refresh for your wedding day. Plan to get highlights two weeks out, or a single-process the week before. Swap in the low-sulfate Dove Color Care Shampoo to your washing routine to protect from fading and keep the color vibrant.

Beauty on the Streets: Makeup artist Michele Carrillo

    August 7, 2013

Picking this week’s Beauty on the Streets was a no-brainer. I met Michele on a shoot I did recently, and fell in love with her work. She’s a true artist and unbelievably talented (plus she comes from a family of chefs!). Here are some of her favorite things! -Shy

    Name: Michelle Carrillo

Age: As a woman in the beauty industry….that’s a question you never get an answer to 😉

    Occupation: Makeup Artist

    Location: NYC

    Twitter/Instagram: @makeupbymichele

“One of my fave moments as a makeup artist was a few months ago when I keyed the makeup for a charity gala here in NYC for Betsey Johnson that benefited WEP (Women’s Education Program). Working alongside such an iconic figure for a great cause and having the honor of doing her makeup was truly a highlight for me in my ten-year career in the beauty industry. She really is as fun and high energy as what you’ve seen. When she did her cartwheel and split on stage, I was like a giddy 15-year-old all over again!”

My style is: Upper East Side princess gets in a fight with Williamsburg hipster. Winner unclear.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Heart beats by Johnnyswim. Fun fact: I recently had the opportunity to do makeup/hair on Johnnyswim‘s Amanda Sudano for an event here in NYC where she and her husband were performing. I instantly fell in love with them as a couple, and of course, as singers. They are extremely talented, yet so down to earth and I can’t wait to see them reach the success they deserve!

Growing up, I really wanted to be: well…a makeup artist. However, a a news reporter was a close second.

The best part about being a makeup artist: are those moments when you make someone not only look but also feel just that much more beautiful.

My best beauty tip is: to take care of your skin before adding lots of makeup to it in order to camouflage imperfections. Weekly exfoliating, masking and daily moisturizing is vital in order to obtain great skin and therefore, great makeup.

People usually compliment my: long hair. It’s all mine but I always get asked if I’m wearing extensions.

I’ll never forget: having the opportunity to see legends in person such as Michael Jackson, Madonna and most recently Cher. Living in New York definitely has its perks! Seeing Cher perform from 10 feet away and having her makeup artist come on stage to touch her up was a priceless moment for me! Moments like those motivate me to push harder knowing there is so much more I want to achieve in this industry.

For my skin, I use: different products during different times of the year. My summer regimen is completely different from my winter one! Currently, in these warmer months I’m using La Prairie‘s new line for oily skin and I love it! It’s oil controlling, pore minimizing and brightening.

My favorite place in the whole world is: anywhere near or on the water. I’ve always loved being on the beach especially when it’s a little empty. I find it so calming and serene to simply listen to the waves crash. My favorite beach thus far has been in St. Thomas. I can’t wait to go back!

Current beauty product obsession: Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancers. Just a tiny drop gives the most flawless finish and completes any beauty look.

But I also can’t live without: My Beautyblender and Lancome Hypnose Drama Full Body Volume Mascara. Both are essentials not only in my professional kit but also my personal one.

Worst habit: Twirling my hair. I try to control the twirling when in public or at least in professional environments (haha!), but if I’m stressed or simply trying to figure something out it’s like I go into twirl-mode and there’s no stopping it. Hey, it could be worse!

When I travel, I MUST have: my headphones, a blanket and socks. I always get so cold on flights!

My favorite scents are: Juicy Couture Couture in the summer, and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb the rest of the year.

People might be surprised to know that: I’m originally from Louisiana. Born and raised, and eventually I plan to return to the South.

My current favorite hair product is: my T3 SinglePass Whirl and Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: chocolate covered strawberries. Two of my absolute favorites rolled up into one — what’s not to like?!

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Que Rico! Cuban Cafe. It’s a small restaurant owned by my sister in Louisiana but it’s all my favorite childhood dishes and every time I go visit I just can’t get enough.

Though I can make a mean: lean burrito with fresh guacamole on the side. Mmmm.

I hope in 5 years: have accomplished most of my career goals and am ready to focus more on my personal life somewhere warm, year round.

Who inspires me: My mother. I know it sounds cliché, but she is truly such an admirable person. She has an amazing sense of self and sense of humor. She looks for the good in everyone and is just as in love with my father as she was when they first met, nearly 40 years ago.

    StyleCaster’s “Lash Supper” with BareEscentuals!

    August 2, 2013

    By Nicci Jordan Hubert.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend what I consider to be a near-perfect event: a mascara launch party, in the Hamptons, with food by a celebrity chef and endless pours of Patron.

Us at the StyleCaster Hamptons house!

The event, which was partnered by makeup empire BareEscentuals and the fabulous StyleCaster media group, celebrated what they called “the Lash Supper,” dubbed as such because it was their final weekend in the Hamptons and their celebration of the launch of BareEscentuals’ new Lash Domination mascara

The Lash Domination formula is an all-in-one mascara which helps with longer lashes and volumizing. It boasts an exclusively designed wand and does *not* have any parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. It is powered by nourishing minerals and quinoa protein complex and adds up to 345 percent more volume to lashes after two coats. I’ve tried the mascara myself, and I am pretty impressed by the strength of the formula.

    BareMinerals Lash Domination mascara

Our delicious treats for the evening were provided by the gorgeous and talented Danielle Saunders, former personal chef for P. Diddy, and current chef for Mary J. Blige.

The photos are provided by photographer Benjamin Lozofsky, and for a more detailed slideshow, click here!

13 products that helped me get through July

    August 1, 2013

It’s that time again! A list of stand outs that got me through the most God-forsaken humid of days…and the otherwise pleasantly sunny times of July. I found myself going back to some of my faves and also discovering a few gems along the way. Without further ado:

    1. John Frieda Clear Glaze Luminous Color Glaze, $10
. Some of you may or may not be familiar with John Frieda’s hair glazes. The jist of it is, they are products you use after you shampoo and condition your hair. You coat hair with the glaze and keep it in for a few minutes and then rinse in out for light-reflecting shine. I’ve tried their Brilliant Brunette glaze (their chocolate tinted one), but here’s why I love this one so much more: It’s not color-depositing like their other ones so it’s easier to use (ie not as messy), and it doesn’t leave any streaks behind in the shower. Plus the shine is quite brilliant. No ammonia, dyes, or peroxides either!

    2. VO5 Salon Series Simply Stunning Leave-In Conditioner, $5.
This is so much bang for your buck. Just $5–$5!–for a strengthening and shine-inducing leave in conditioner. It contains five essential vitamins and 11 revitalizing oils to protect against heat and split ends. I use it right out of the shower, before drying my hair. Props to my cousin Safia who discovered this lil miracle.

    3. Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub, $15
. At some point in the recent past I realized I can’t do without a body exfoliating scrub in the shower, and not all scrubs are created equal. This one is a happy medium — it’s not too dry (and over-grainy) so that it just chunks away in the shower, but it also doesn’t dissolve immediately against wet skin. Plus, it’s extra moisturizing thanks to its almond oil. Scentwise, it has the lightest hint of lime. Your super smooth skin will thank you.

    4. Suave Skin Therapy Aloe with Cucumber, $3.
I love that you don’t have to spend a ton for body lotion that moisturizes and has a fresh a scent as Suave. I’m a diligent post-shower-moisturizER, and Suave’s Advanced Therapy line not only is a nice, light option for the summer, it has skin benefiting ingredients like aloe extract that keeps you smooth for up to 24 hours. (PS Check out Suave’s FB page for some limited-time giveaways!)

    5. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, $10. Sometimes, it’s nice to go back to the basics. CeraVe’s skincare line is one of my favorites to just keep my skin balanced and fresh. When I’m using this, there’s never any irritation issues — just a gentle cleansing that doesn’t strip my skin of moisture or leave it dry.

    6. Pond’s Luminous Finish BB Plus Cream with SPF 15, $10. Just a refresher, BB Creams have a few purposes: to impart a light tint, to help even out skin tone with its complexion correcting properties, and to protect from the sun with SPF. This new one from Pond’s is pretty amazing. Not only does it smell like heaven, it gives a light, dewy finish, and did help make my skin ridiculously soft (plus it’ll start evening out skin tone within a few weeks). It only comes in Light and Medium at the moment, which like many BB creams, is a little frustrating for darker skin tones. I also think this is better for dry-to-normal skin types. But it’s definitely made my mornings so much faster — just a little BB Cream and mascara, and I’m out the door.

Ruby Kisses HD Set ‘N Forget powder in Banana, $6. On a humid day, I never leave the house without a dab of this powder. It’s come through for me time and time again to set my makeup. The best part is, it doesn’t finish chalky or cakey at all. Find it online or at local beauty stores.

Bare Minerals Stroke of Light Eye Brightener, $22. This was one of those products I recently re-discovered. Just a short stroke of this on the brow bone and under your eyes give you the most beautiful, and natural, light reflecting finish. Plus, it’s part-concealer to hide any dark shadows in that area.

Lise Watier Prebiotic Micellar Water, $25.  I was noticing my eyes getting itchy randomly during the day and when I got them checked recently, I was told that I did have some blocked glands which could be leaving my eyes dry. This could be from allergies, or even makeup. Besides doing warm compresses in the shower, I thought I would play it safe and be extra diligent about removing my eye makeup. Luckily, I found this to be notably non-irritating. It’s a light makeup remover with skin-balancing ingredients and the consistency is somewhere between water and oil. Best of all, it takes my mascara and liner off with minimal effort.

Thymes Temple Tree Jasmine Hand Cream, $17. A super floral hand cream, drenched with the scent of jasmine. You have to love the flower at least as much as I do to really love it. I keep it at the office and apply it at least a few times throughout the day. The bubble of fragrance that soon after surrounds me is just a bonus.

Rimmel Lasting Finish - Kate Moss lipstick

Rimmel Lasting Finish Kate Moss Lipstick in 104, $5. So anyone remember the hottest days in early July? Well imagine having the worst congestion and sore throat during that time AND not drinking or eating anything during the day (I was fasting). No bueno. One morning during this time, I just needed to pull myself together for work and — not trying to sound too contrived here — but this lipstick did it. Feeling like crap inside but walking into the office and getting compliments right off the bat made me realize a $5 lipstick can be your best disguise.

Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss, $16. On the other end of the color spectrum, I pretty much have one of these Benefit glosses in every purse now. A silky, delightful lgloss with a gorgeous tinge of color that smoothes on lips like butter. Light and sweet for the summer (they taste like apricot!). Shout out to Lollibop, Kiss You, and A-Lister.

Ice Breakers Duo Fruit & Cool in Strawberry. Pretty random, but a nice little flavor I discovered. According to a study by researchers at the University of Oregon, social gatherings and meeting new people – especially sparked by summer outings and fun events – is good for your overall well-being. Fun fact: It was actually because of this fact that Ice Breakers teamed up with Hampton Jitney to send commuters off to the Hamptons with adventure bags full of things like beach balls and smartphone speakers to help them ‘break the ice’ last month. Well, these definitely would get you off to a good start — love these berry flavored mints!

On that note, how do you usually ‘break the ice?’ And what were YOUR favorite products to use in July?
