My skincare routine: Laser and Light Treatments at Skin Laundry

March 7, 2017

I don’t know if you’re good about facials, because I’m not. I’m also really bad at getting massages, manis and pedis…you would think I’m just in the wrong field completely. Unless I’m going with a friend, I just get bored waiting for my services to end. That’s why I took so well to a concept like Skin Laundry. Skin Laundry, founded by Yen Reis, is a laser and light clinic that also has their own skincare line. The concept is simple – drop in, get a 15-minute YAG laser that deep cleans, and IPL treatment (to help with scarring), with no downtime. You’re in and out.

The process is pretty simple. I usually go without any makeup, but they will do a double wipe with their cleansing cloths to make sure your skin is makeup free. Next they’ll cover your eyes with goggles, and gently tie back your hair so it’s not in the way. Then, they’ll go over your face twice with a laser. I’m sure the level of discomfort varies from person to person — I’d give it about a 3 on the pain scale (it’s really not much). it feels like a rubber band pinching your skin. Afterwards, they’ll spread a gel on your skin and apply an IPL light treatment that will help improve your complexion. It’s just burst of warmth on your skin (again not painful). They end by spreading on a little moisturizer and SPF, and you’re off. They advise to stay away from any exfoliators, scrubs, and retinol for a day following your treatment.

Personally, I prefer this light, non-aggressive treatment. I also love their easy online booking system (just pick your time, day, and location online and walk in), it’s pretty much the most simple and effective service I’ve committed to lately. It’s $65 per treatment, and you can get it in bundles which saves you a little money long term. I’ve found it worth it for myself, so it’s something I don’t mind investing in (I usually buy a bundle of three at a time). It’s my once a month refresh. Most of their locations are in NYC and CA, but I’ve heard whispers of more locations opening soon, including in the Midwest. If you have access to one, the first visit is free, so I really recommend going in to check it out!

Try this: Aztec Secret Clay Mask

February 1, 2015

In more than a few instances, I kept coming across Aztec Secret’s Indian Healing Clay Mask either in the stories I’ve had to edit or other bloggers’ recommendation. I was finally curious enough to go to Whole Foods and pick some up with some apple cider vinegar and try it myself.

Weekly DIY clay mask

The mask itself is a natural calcium bentonite green clay which helps detox and draw out impurities in the skin. When mixed with organic apple cider vinegar (I use this one from Brragg which is raw and unfiltered), it becomes even more powerful. The vinegar has a bunch of alpha hydroxy acids that help to remove dead skin cells to make your complexion more even (it’s great alone to help treat zits and age spots, and even add a ton of shine if used on hair alone).

The mask itself tingles a little and then tightens, and PS, smells DISGUSTING. I mix a teaspoon with a capful of ACV (the mixture should bubble a little), or until the consistency is a little more pastey. If it’s too watery, it won’t go on well, and will take forever to dry. If it’s too solid, it won’t spread well. After you wash it off (about 10 minutes), you might notice your skin a little pink which goes down after a few minutes (make sure you use a gentle moisturizer after! I use Philosophy Renewed Hope In A Jar). You might notice a few whiteheads too, which is just the toxins being extracted. I’m not sure how sensi-skin types would react to it since it isn’t the most gentle mask, but it is a nice pick-me-up for my combo skin that I use on the weekends or before big events so my makeup goes on smoother. Plus it’s really affordable — I got mine from Whole Foods for $8 (think the ACV was another $7) and a pound will last you for months and months.

Anyone else try it? What do you think?

Philosophy teams up with singer Natasha Bedingfield for a hopeful initiative

January 21, 2015

Last night, Philosophy hosted a concert with British singer Natasha Bedingfield to bring light to their new Hope & Grace Initiative — going forward, the brand will be donating 1 percent of all their product sales (whether it’s at Sephora, Ulta, or QVC) to support community-based mental health efforts. To just give you an idea, they are the #1 selling skincare brand on QVC, and they’re hoping to donate at least $10,000,000 in less than five years.

.

When they came up with the idea of restoring hope in women who are dealing with mental health issues — studies show 1 in every 4 women are struggling with a mental health issues, but more than 40 percent never seek treatment because of the stigma attached to itJill Scalamandre (COTY’s Chief Marketing Officer) told the crowd that whenever she’s feeling down she would turn on Bedingfield’s music. Her songs like ‘Pocket Full of Sunshine’ and ‘Unwritten,’ she explained always brought her up. When the brand started thinking of partnering wish someone who could bring awareness to their initiative, they thought Natasha would be the best fit. They reached out to her and within 6 days, she was on board. Within another week, the song “Hope” was written. Twenty percent of the profits from the single, which Bedingfield debuted last night, will be donated to the Hope & Grace Initiative.

To kick off the launch, the brand presented their first $20,000 check to Connect, and organization that helps women suffering with domestic violence. Talk about a feel-good evening.

Renewed Hope in a Jar

To round it out, Philosophy has also launched their evolved best-selling Hope in a Jar with Renewed Hope in a Jar, a more lightweight, all-day moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic, mandelic, and citric) to improve pore visibility and fine lines. In one week, 100% of users reported an improvement in skin texture, and after 4, 79% saw a reduction in pore size. I love this newer version — the original was a tad too heavy for me but I used this one for the first time last night before I went to bed and this morning my skin feels so smooth and soft today (we call it a #WinterWin). Going to keep using it to see if it keeps improving!

Taking it to go: Philosophy’s No Reason To Hide

September 18, 2014

90% of all women want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance.
Only 2% of women think they are beautiful.

These stats are pretty staggering, but it’s been the basis of Philosophy’s new No Reason To Hide confidence campaign. I’ve pretty much taken their challenge to try out their new products and see if it’s made a difference (spoiler alert: it has). I wrote about them before here, but to reiterate: their No Reason to Hide Multi-Imperfection Transforming Serum and accompanying Instant Skin-Tone Perfecting Moisturizer with SPF 20 work together to treat skin concerns such as blotchiness, enlarged pores, dark spots, and acne marks.

Taking it with me on my travels!

Since I’ve started using it a month ago, I’ve seen a big difference. In fact, I’ve only been using their tinted moisturizer in the morning alone (it gets extra points for having SPF in it!). Even though great skin is a big factor in boosting confidence on the outside (mine’s always a work in progress), Philosophy knows that confidence isn’t only about appearance.

They’ve taken initiative by launching a Confidence Community on Facebook. There, you can find confidence tips (Tip 1: Do a good deed — helping others will lift your spirits. You’ll feel better about yourself and your place in the world). It started to make me think about what makes me feel most confident, and I think for me it begins and ends with my family. Whenever I’m spending time with them and re-connecting with where I came from, I feel like I have a stronger sense of self. What about you? After I thought about this, I took their quiz on Facebook and loved my results: apparently I’m a confidence rock ;). They hit it right on the mark:

Philosophy’s new No Reason to Hide products are EVERYTHING.

September 12, 2014

Hellllo lovelies! All this eating and not enough posting on what’s been going on with my beauty arsenal. As a beauty blogger, I go to a TON of events for skin, makeup, and hair products (no really, a ton), so when a product stands out to me the way Philosophy’s new No Reason To Hide ones have, it’s kinda a big deal. Philosophy has always been one of my favorite brands for their multi-tasking products and cutesy, inspiring message on their packaging which always encourages one to love, feel beautiful, and have hope (like their best-selling Hope in a Jar, with accompanying message, “Where there is hope, there can be faith. Where there is faith, miracles can occur.”)

Philosophy's new No Reason to Hide products!

On the same thread, Philosophy is now on a confidence campaign. What does that mean? It’s a two-prong approach to A) try out their new products and see the difference it makes when you look in the mirror, but also to B) really reflect on what moments make you feel the most confident on their inside. So I did both –more on this in a minute!

Recently, I was invited to check out the launch of the newest from the brand, which includes their No Reason to Hide Multi-Imperfection Transforming Serum ($68) and accompanying Instant Skin-Tone Perfecting Moisturizer with SPF 20 ($45). The combo was developed to treat basically everything, from blotchiness, to enlarged pores, dark spots, and acne marks. In clinical studies, these products have shown:

• in 4 weeks: 88% of women showed a significant reduction in the appearance of red spots and blotchiness
• in 8 weeks: 94% showed a dramatic correction in the look of dark spots, revealing remarkably even skin-tone
• in 12 weeks: 100% of women showed transformative improvement on multiple skin imperfections

The serum contains a mix of niacinamide (vitamin B3 which helps eliminate dark spots), vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant), and salicylic acid (to shrink enlarged, darkened pores), and the moisturizer is kind of like a BB cream with is light tint (comes in light and medium for now but they will be rolling out more shades soon!) which also contains some of the same ingredients as the serum to also treat while it lightly conceals.

Medium shade of the moisturizer

I’ve been using them for almost a month now, but in less than two weeks I could already tell a difference. The serum is lightweight and brightens, and the moisturizer is my favorite for its instant gratification. The medium shade is perfect for my skin and I’ve since foregone all foundations on the daily so what you see is mostly my own skin showing through. I seriously can’t stop touching my skin.

In celebration of the line, Philosophy also launched a Confidence Community on Facebook. Take their quiz to reveal your confidence personality, and you are automatically entered to win their sweepstakes, which includes:
• 1 grand prize: $2,500 Ann Taylor shopping spree, a year’s supply of No Reason To Hide and Philosophy fan favorites.
• 5 runner ups will receive a Philosophy cleanse, peel, treat package.
• 10 winners will receive No Reason To Hide serum and perfecting moisturizer.

Product rave: DDF Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer

November 23, 2012

If you have issues with hyperpigmentation, the newest from DDF, their Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer, is worth looking into.

New from DDF: Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer

Working with the idea that during the nighttime is the optimal period where skin absorbs products, this product works during the sleep cycle to hydrate and reverse melanin build up (hence, discoloration) for a clearer complexion.

What makes it work? A combination of niacinamide (vitamin b3 that helps against discoloration), n-acetyl glucosamine (helps with scar healing), and undecylenoyl phenylalanine (a whitening agent). The three have years of scientific research to improving skin spots. Plus, it has antioxidants like spirulina platensis extract and beta-carotene. I also love that it isn’t a sticky serum (like a lot of spot-fighting products are). Instead, it’s a light, non-greasy cream that you use just once or twice a day as needed.

I personally saw a difference in 7-10 days, which is a lot to say because I find brightening products take a while to kick in. Plus, it didn’t irritate my skin (no peeling, roughness, though my skin would have dry spots which I can also credit to the changing weather here). It’s usually when a friend notices and comments that I’ll put it on my blog, so here we are :).

DDF’s Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer is available now for $60 at nordstrom.com.

What brightening/hyperpigmentation products do you love? Do any of you feel like you can use this?
