Beauty on the Streets: Trish Hosein

February 27, 2014

This week’s spotlight is on LA-based songbird, Trish Hosein. I first found Trish on a recent visit to Cali, when some friends and I decided to stop by Republic of Pie for some coffee and dessert. From the other room, we heard the most enchanting voice performing on stage. It wasn’t hard to see that this one-woman show was super talented, making her own music and expertly layering her beautiful voice over catchy tunes as she went along. We promptly moved up close and stayed way longer than we intended to just so we could listen to the rest of her set. Her songs are on heavy rotation on my iPod now. Look out for her new single, Swimming Pool (out on iTunes on April 15th) so you can get addicted too. In the mean time, read on to learn more about everything lovely and delicious this songstress keeps close: -Shy

Name: Trish Hosein

Age: 24

Occupation: Singer/Songwriter

Location: Studio City, CA

“I make indie/pop music that is, for better or for worse, unabashedly me – my struggles, my emotions, my truth. I utilize a lot of vocal layering, harmonies and loops. I love to mesh quirky melodies and lyrics that you don’t hear much on pop radio with catchy ones that you want to sing along to.”

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I think is: “My dog is so cute! He’s the first thing I see when I wake up and he’s usually cuddled up against me or rolled up in a ball at the corner of the bed. Hard not to smile waking up to that.”

The song I have on repeat right now is: Lorde – Ribs. I love her. She’s fantastic.

Growing up, I really wanted to be: a singer. But like a pop star singer. More specifically, a Spice Girl. Dance moves included. I put on concerts for my stuffed animals.

When I go on stage, I feel: PUMPED.

The best part about being a musician is: making people understand something that I feel and can’t explain otherwise.

A good introduction to my music is: my newest single Swimming Pool! I’m proud of it because it’s a fun summertime song but it also has themes of some deeper stuff like class struggle and coming into your own.

My best beauty tips is: put on mascara as soon as you get out of the shower (right after you put on a good moisturizer). While my lashes are still damp the mascara comes on thicker and smoother.

People usually compliment my: hair. And eyelashes. Which is also hair. So, hair.

I’ll never forget: sat next to U2’s the Edge at a dinner party! What a humble and wonderful guy. He asked me about how I go about writing songs and I thought “why are you asking ME this?! You’re THE EDGE!”

For my skin, I use: Lush Creamed Almond Coconut Smoothie. Also, this is kind of weird but, I wax my jawline to my cheekbone and it makes the skin really smooth and radiant and makeup looks better on it.

My favorite place in the whole world is: Gosh that’s hard. I love so many places and cultures! I would have to say San Diego since that’s where I grew up. It’s so gorgeous and I feel such a sense of relief and relaxation breathing in the ocean air there or going for a run in the canyons.

Current beauty product obsession: Dior’s Diorshow Black Out Mascara. It’s amazing and people always ask if my eyelashes are real when I use it.

But I also can’t live without: Make Up Forever ProFinish Powder Foundation.

Worst habit: I leave cabinets open.Well that’s definitely not my worse habit but it’s the oddest. I’ll come home and all the kitchen cabinets will be open like some sort of frying pan burglar passed through.

When I travel, I MUST have: Bose Quiet Comfort 15 noise canceling headphones.

My favorite scent is:Bath & Body Works Eucalyptus Spearmint Body Cream. I’m not much of a perfume girl but I’m obsessed with this lotion. It’s so calming and just makes me feel good.

People might be surprised to know that: that I write a lot of country music! It’s a little unexpected if you’ve heard my music but I think I’m a songwriter at heart and country songs have some great writing. My approach to writing a country song is totally different from writing an indie/pop song for myself so it allows me to use different techniques and skills which is fun.

My current favorite hair product is: Motions Leave in Conditioner. It’s a necessity for me. I don’t do much to my hair, pretty much just wash it and throw some of that stuff in. I also love Lush’s R&B Hair Moisturizer.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: avocados! They are a staple in my daily diet and it boggles my mind how someone could not like them.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Gyu-Kaku in Sherman Oaks on Ventura and Van Nuys. I eat paleo (basically a lot of meat and veggies) so this place is perfect for me. It’s a Japanese barbecue restaurant where you order your meat/fish and sides a la carte and cook it yourself at the grill on your table. They also have awesome happy hour deals!

Though I can make a mean: homemade pizza! I actually make the crust out of almond flour so it’s healthy, packed with protein, and very filling.

I hope in 10 years: go on tour. Make lots of music. Explore the world. Write lots of songs. Sell a bunch of records. Maybe have babies.

Who inspires me: In my career, my peers really inspire me. The people working day jobs and then going to the studio all night. Writing lyrics on napkins while they’re working at the coffee shop. I have friends who are way more talented and hardworking than I am and they make me want to be better. In life in general, my parents really inspire me. I want to be the kind of lady they would be proud of. My dad has always taught me that it’s important to find an unwavering inner peace that can’t be touched by anyone or anything. That’s something I’m always working towards.

Beauty on the Streets: Mel Rose of Food and the City

October 22, 2013

This week’s spotlight is on blogger extraordinaire, Mel Rose! As a fellow Progresso Artisan Ambassador (more on this soon!), Mel and I were busy roaming the NYCWFF together this past weekend and indulging in one of our shared passions — food! Not only is she an established YouTube makeup and fashion guru, she shares her delicious recipes on her food blog. Read on to learn more about what makes her tick: -Shy

Name: Mel Rose

Age: 22

Occupation: Writer of Food and the City & Beauty/Fashion guru on YouTube

Location: Bronx, NY

Twitter: @OfficialMel

Instagram: @OfficialMelRose

“Just a regular young 20-somethin’ born and raised in New York, who is crazy for all things fashion and food! I love to entertain, hang out with my dog, and sprinkle glitter on pretty much anything I can get my hands on!”

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I think is: “I’m not ready to wake up..five more minutes please?”

The song I have on repeat right now is: Wake Me Up by Avicii! That song just gets me going. Anytime I’m feeling “ehh” I listen to that song and want to conquer the world!

Growing up, I really wanted to be: A teacher…and a movie star. But no, really!

The best part about being a blogger is: Sharing my ideas with the world! Just being able to get my thoughts and creativity typed out and on a screen for thousands to see.

My best styling tip is: Wear what you feel comfortable in. Not a fan of the way peplum tops make you look? Forget em’.

My favorite places to shop are: Zara, H&M, Nordstrom, J.Crew, plus any cute boutique I may stumble upon.

One of my best makeup tips is: Get your eyebrows in check. They can drastically change your appearance. Play around with shapes, grow them out just to buzz em’ back off again, and look a little crazy until you find the best shape that works for you. It took me years!

Check out Mel's YT channel!

People usually compliment my: Eyes. They have a tendency to sometimes turn into this really light caramel color. I have no idea why it happens, but I’ll take it!

I’ll never forget: I went out for a drink with a few people, and may have had a little too much wine. Next thing I knew I was on the dance floor teaching former football player Michael Irvin how to do the Macarena. True story!

For my skin, I use: A little olive oil to help remove my eye makeup. Not only is it great at breaking down mascara/eye liner, it leaves your skin feeling soft!

My favorite place in the whole world is: Paris, France for sure! My boyfriend and I visited for a couple of weeks last year and the whole experience was amazing!

Current beauty product obsession: I’m really loving the Lorac Pro-to-go palette. I travel a lot and this beauty is equipped with eye shadows, a bronzer, and blushes! Hello non-overweight luggage!

But I also can’t live without: MAC Studio Finish concealer. Its like, an eraser. I love that stuff.

Worst habit: Planning to get ready early and then moving in slow motion since I think I have all this time. Translation: I always end up late.

When I travel, I MUST have: A box of green tea with me! You’d be surprised how hard it can be to find good, green tea! (totally random I know!). My favorite is Teavana’s Matcha Japanese Green Tea!

My favorite scent is:Dream by GAP. It was something I used as a teen, and my love for it was recently rekindled!

People might be surprised to know that: I’m a picky eater, and have been my whole life. I’d probably be a vegetarian if I didn’t love chicken dishes so much! A picky food blogger, go figure.

My current favorite hair product is: Josie Maran Argan Oil. I just rub a little on my ends when I get out of the shower and they feel like new!

I don’t understand people who don’t like: Pizza! I mean really, how can ANYONE not like pizza?!

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Buddakan on 9th Avenue in Chelsea. The atmosphere is great, the food never disappoints, and it always makes for a great ‘girls night out’ spot. Plus a scene from Sex and the City was filmed there, so that makes it all the more fashionable!

Though I can make a mean: Steak! I’m not partial to steak myself, but its probably the #1 request I get from my boyfriend to make for him!

I hope in 5 years: I have an established career in the blogging department and can take off to travel the world for months at a time!

Who inspires me: Everything inspires me. Music, TV, trends, nature, friends/family–you name it! The world is one big visionary scene that we all see differently. Take what you may and run with it!

Beauty on the Streets: Nyala Chahine of

October 8, 2013

This week’s spotlight is on Nyala Chahine, who just launched her online store which caters cool, trendy, and modest options for the fashion forward. Not only is her fashion sense fabulous, but she has a few beauty faves from her extensive catalouge of experience as a beauty consultant at! -Shy

Name: Nyala Chahine

Age: 30- eek that just happened, still absorbing it.

Occupation: Owner & Consultant for Beauty

Location: New York, NY

Twitter/Instagram: @shopnylii

“I was washed ashore the Manhattan Island three years ago with great e-commerce experience from I tried the corporate worlds of media, consumer packaged goods, PR, beauty and even technology to no substantial fulfillment. I then, decided to fill the gap myself, hence Nylii and my Beauty Consultant role with

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I think is: most mornings, I feel great and thank God for being alive. Other times, it’s, ‘S*** I’m late!’

The song I have on repeat right now is: The Weeknd’s – Montreal. I actually have everything he ever sang on repeat!

Growing up, I really wanted to be: I went from your parental influenced doctor to documentary filmmaker, to beauty expert, to corporate ladder slave, to e-commerce entrepreneur. I hope this is my last stop. I suffer from career ADD.

The best part of opening my online store is: Being able to fill a large gap for women who want to look trendy but still be modest and demure in their selection. We normally have to go from store to store to find a few items that might work. I enjoy representing these women by offering a wider selection of clothing that fits with in their style boundaries, all in one place.

My best styling tip is: Compliment your figure. Don’t fight it.

People usually compliment my: Lips.

I’ll never forget: I rode horseback through the sand, around the pyramids in Egypt. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

For my skin, I use: For many years I have been asked what I use. I have a very simple 3 step process: 1. Cor Silver Soap (my skins soul- with the help of my Clarisonic of course) 2. CosMedix Define Vitamin A Resurfacing Treatment 3. Sephora Instant Moisturizer

My favorite place in the whole world is: This is hard! Theoretically it’s where ever my heart (my husband) is. Although I have to say it would be Dubai. The beach is pristine, the shopping is superb the cuisine is spectacular and international. The nightlife is out of this world. Architecture is insane. The people are beautiful and the service is royalty. Dubai is EVERYTHING!

Current beauty product obsession: I’m currently loving lipstick I’ve always tried to reduce any attention to my lips but lately, I’m all over the red, pink and nude lipsticks! My favorites being Tom Ford Sable Smoke and NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage.

But I also can’t live without: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder! It’s my real life PhotoShop filter.

Worst habit: hmm… that I usually always have a response.

When I travel, I MUST have: My Nap Luxe Blanket from Brookstone– pure coziness.

My favorite scent is:Tom Ford Santal Blush

People might be surprised to know that: I am a hippie at heart.

My current favorite hair product is: Pure Monoi Oil. I just rub a small amount between my palms and smooth it over my wet hair. Best conditioning product there is.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: green tea.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Yemen Café in Brooklyn Heights – hole in the wall but fills me up with bliss! I love their Salta a sizzling gravy with, okra, potato, carrots, and tomato. The menu item comes with a huge side of roasted lamb, traditional Yemeni bread, salad and a lamb soup.

Though I can make a mean: Lemon garlic mashed potatoes- I’ve been told they are the best they’ve had.

I hope in 5 years: Have additions to my family IA!

Who inspires me: I have 3 people who inspire me- My parents, ( yes they are one) My mom, an entrepreneur and creative mind that’s where I get all my creativity and style from. My father inspires me to be humble while I climb to the top of my world. My husband motivates and supports me no matter what I do, so I feel I can do anything with him by my side. My other most important inspiration is Colleen Winter Co-Founder of I have watched her successfully build a used clothing store into one of the webs most exciting online destinations. Her work ethic, humbleness, and willingness to give people chances have truly pushed me to my current position in life. I am so grateful for her.

Beauty on the Streets: Designer Leslie Tessler

September 12, 2013

This week’s spotlight is on the South America-based designer, who makes some of the coolest capes you’ll set your eyes on. Check out her Q/A and designs below! -Shy

Name: Leslie Tessler

Age: 32

Occupation: Founder / Creative Director, Leslie Tessler

Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Twitter/Instagram: @leslietessler

“In 2010 I decided I needed a change so I quit my job in marketing, sold my belongings and moved from New York to Argentina for six months to learn Spanish. Three years (plus one new business, one husband, one dog and one baby on the way) later, I now call Buenos Aires my permanent home and couldn’t be happier!”

The song I have on repeat right now is: Dolly Parton – “9 to 5”

Growing up, I really wanted to be: oddly enough, an orthodontist.

The best part about being a designer is: designing pieces for myself that I can’t wait to have in my closet

My best styling tip is: don’t over style. Pick one statement piece, even if it’s something subtle like an earring and keep the rest simple.

Some of the capes Leslie designs

Leslie Tessler designs

People usually compliment my: eye color – it’s a strange yellowish mix that I guess is unusual.

I’ll never forget: going to the grocery store for the first time in Buenos Aires. At the check out, they asked me for my ID (documento), as they normally do here. I had no idea what they were asking me for so I froze and ran out of the store. To this day, I’m too embarrassed to go back.

For my skin, I use: I don’t use much on my skin but a well-known dermatologist once told me the worst thing you can do for your skin is to go to bed without washing your face so I never do that. EVER. I wash my face daily with Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil A/O and use Clarins SPF20 Brightening Hydrating Day Lotion to moisturize and protect from the sun. At night I use Mario Badescu’s Seaweed Night Cream.

My favorite place in the whole world is: Bora Bora. When we decided to do a two-part honeymoon (Bora Bora and then Japan), I have to admit I was much more excited about the Japanese portion of the trip. I’m just a little too ADD to lie on the beach for a week. But wow was I blown away! I have never felt so pampered or relaxed in my life. I’m sure my new hubby had a lot to do with it but either way, Bora Bora was magical and I cannot wait to go back.

Current beauty product obsession: Korres Lip Butter in pomegranate – sheer coral. It’s always been a struggle finding a lip color that’s bold yet doesn’t make me look like a clown. This lip butter looks great on everyone and I love how easy it is to build from super sheer to the perfect deep coral tint

But I also can’t live without: Nars the Multiple in Orgasm. I’m a sucker for a great glow so I’m constantly trying out whatever new products hit the market but no many how many “multi-taskers” or illuminators I buy, I always go back to The Multiple stick. It’s quite simply the best.

Worst habit: Whistling. Although I am am an excellent whistler, apparently I sometimes tend to do it at rather inappropriate times.

When I travel, I MUST have: Lots of water, an aisle seat and an eye mask

My favorite scent is: Tom Ford Neroli Portofino

People might be surprised to know that: I’ve never eaten ketchup.

My current favorite hair product is: Kérastase Powder Bluff Dry Shampoo. I’ve always been a big fan of dry shampoo but Powder Bluff is the first one I’ve found that leaves my hair looking so fresh and smelling divine.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: peanut butter or cookies or peanut butter cookies

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: I know it’s not exciting, especially since I do consider myself to be a “foodie” but living primarily outside of the US has only strengthened my already deep love (some may call it an obsession) for Houstons’ spinach and artichoke dip. I’ve been known to go straight from the airport when I land in the US and eat an entire portion. What can I say? Girl needs her fix! When I’m in Argentina I also dream about Momofuku’s pork buns and cookies from Levain Bakery.

Though I can make a mean: Risotto.

I hope in 5 years: will have a house full of kiddos and dogs / will be able to speak conversational Portuguese / will be a master in Pilates / will be loving life!

Who inspires me: My grandmothers. I’m lucky enough to still have both of my beautiful grandmothers with me. They’re very different in some ways but both are total spitfires with incredible spirits. Often times if I feel like giving up or just feel sorry for myself, I think of them. Knowing that I’ve got even a little piece of both of them in me is a huge motivator.

Beauty on the Streets: Makeup artist Michele Carrillo

August 7, 2013

Picking this week’s Beauty on the Streets was a no-brainer. I met Michele on a shoot I did recently, and fell in love with her work. She’s a true artist and unbelievably talented (plus she comes from a family of chefs!). Here are some of her favorite things! -Shy

Name: Michelle Carrillo

Age: As a woman in the beauty industry….that’s a question you never get an answer to 😉

Occupation: Makeup Artist

Location: NYC

Twitter/Instagram: @makeupbymichele

“One of my fave moments as a makeup artist was a few months ago when I keyed the makeup for a charity gala here in NYC for Betsey Johnson that benefited WEP (Women’s Education Program). Working alongside such an iconic figure for a great cause and having the honor of doing her makeup was truly a highlight for me in my ten-year career in the beauty industry. She really is as fun and high energy as what you’ve seen. When she did her cartwheel and split on stage, I was like a giddy 15-year-old all over again!”

My style is: Upper East Side princess gets in a fight with Williamsburg hipster. Winner unclear.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Heart beats by Johnnyswim. Fun fact: I recently had the opportunity to do makeup/hair on Johnnyswim‘s Amanda Sudano for an event here in NYC where she and her husband were performing. I instantly fell in love with them as a couple, and of course, as singers. They are extremely talented, yet so down to earth and I can’t wait to see them reach the success they deserve!

Growing up, I really wanted to be: well…a makeup artist. However, a a news reporter was a close second.

The best part about being a makeup artist: are those moments when you make someone not only look but also feel just that much more beautiful.

My best beauty tip is: to take care of your skin before adding lots of makeup to it in order to camouflage imperfections. Weekly exfoliating, masking and daily moisturizing is vital in order to obtain great skin and therefore, great makeup.

People usually compliment my: long hair. It’s all mine but I always get asked if I’m wearing extensions.

I’ll never forget: having the opportunity to see legends in person such as Michael Jackson, Madonna and most recently Cher. Living in New York definitely has its perks! Seeing Cher perform from 10 feet away and having her makeup artist come on stage to touch her up was a priceless moment for me! Moments like those motivate me to push harder knowing there is so much more I want to achieve in this industry.

For my skin, I use: different products during different times of the year. My summer regimen is completely different from my winter one! Currently, in these warmer months I’m using La Prairie‘s new line for oily skin and I love it! It’s oil controlling, pore minimizing and brightening.

My favorite place in the whole world is: anywhere near or on the water. I’ve always loved being on the beach especially when it’s a little empty. I find it so calming and serene to simply listen to the waves crash. My favorite beach thus far has been in St. Thomas. I can’t wait to go back!

Current beauty product obsession: Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancers. Just a tiny drop gives the most flawless finish and completes any beauty look.

But I also can’t live without: My Beautyblender and Lancome Hypnose Drama Full Body Volume Mascara. Both are essentials not only in my professional kit but also my personal one.

Worst habit: Twirling my hair. I try to control the twirling when in public or at least in professional environments (haha!), but if I’m stressed or simply trying to figure something out it’s like I go into twirl-mode and there’s no stopping it. Hey, it could be worse!

When I travel, I MUST have: my headphones, a blanket and socks. I always get so cold on flights!

My favorite scents are: Juicy Couture Couture in the summer, and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb the rest of the year.

People might be surprised to know that: I’m originally from Louisiana. Born and raised, and eventually I plan to return to the South.

My current favorite hair product is: my T3 SinglePass Whirl and Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: chocolate covered strawberries. Two of my absolute favorites rolled up into one — what’s not to like?!

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Que Rico! Cuban Cafe. It’s a small restaurant owned by my sister in Louisiana but it’s all my favorite childhood dishes and every time I go visit I just can’t get enough.

Though I can make a mean: lean burrito with fresh guacamole on the side. Mmmm.

I hope in 5 years: have accomplished most of my career goals and am ready to focus more on my personal life somewhere warm, year round.

Who inspires me: My mother. I know it sounds cliché, but she is truly such an admirable person. She has an amazing sense of self and sense of humor. She looks for the good in everyone and is just as in love with my father as she was when they first met, nearly 40 years ago.

Beauty on the Streets: Megan Collins of Style Girlfriend

May 9, 2013

Megan Collins of Style Girlfriend

Name: Megan Collins

Age: old enough to know better than to answer that question! 😉

Occupation: Writer

Location: NYC

Twitter: @styleGF

Style Girlfriend is a blog I started that’s all about guys’ style from the female perspective. Basically, I give guys the insider info on what we ladies like to see them wearing…and what we definitely DON’T (think: bootcut jeans and ratty, bbq sauce-stained hoodies).”

My style is: Upper East Side princess gets in a fight with Williamsburg hipster. Winner unclear.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Mirrors, by Justin Timberlake. Yes, still.

Growing up, I really wanted to be: a professional namer – of pets, babies, buildings. Whatever might need a name, I’d be there to christen it. Turns out, that is not a viable career option. Still seems like it would be fun, though.

The best part about being a female menswear blogger: is that my voice stands out in the crowd a bit better. I’m one of only a few women talking about guys’ style out there today!

My best fashion advice: Put your tailor on speed dial! It’s incredible what taking in an inch (or, ahem, letting it out) here or there can do to make your clothes look 100x more amazing on you. Fit is everything.

Guys, please stop: wearing running shoes when you’re not actually running.

People usually compliment my: Eyes. They’re big and brown and run in my family.

I’ll never forget the time: I saw Joshua Malina (Will Bailey from The West Wing) at a skate park in LA, and was totally starstruck. Honestly, I never geek out over celebrities, but I am such a huge West Wing fan. My friends thought I was the biggest nerd for getting so excited.

For my skin, I use: The whole skincare line from NARS is amazing. Definitely worth the splurge.

My favorite place in the whole world is: my parents’ backyard in Wisconsin. They’ve got a beautiful patio and have put a ton of time into the gardening and landscaping. There’s no place better on a Sunday morning in the summer than out there, listening to The Beatles (a family fave), sipping coffee, and reading the paper.

Current beauty product obsession: Jin Soon’s quick dry top coat, Top Gloss. I’m terrible at giving myself manicures at home, but this stuff actually makes them last!

But I also can’t live without: Bumble & bumble Surf Spray. Now that warm weather is finally here (or at least, on its way), I’ll be rocking beachy waves non-stop.

Worst habit: I ma-a-a-a-y bite my nails when I’m stressed. Maybe. Don’t tell anyone.

When I travel, I MUST have: a big bottle of water. Trying to combat that drying airplane air, I chug water like it’s my job whenever I fly.

My favorite scent right now: Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. Mmmm.

People might be surprised to know that: I have kind of a dirty mouth? I try to keep curse words off my social networks (what if I decide I want to be president one day?? Can’t have that stuff lurking for posterity around the interwebs). But yeah, sometimes I swear like a sailor.

My current favorite hair product is: Man Cave Caffeine Shampoo. It’s not available in the US yet, but it’s paraben-free and I like the idea of a jolt of java for my hair in the mornings. It seems only fair, since the rest of me gets at least a few cups each day.

I don’t understand people who don’t like: cheese curds. I am from Wisconsin, after all.

The restaurant I can never get tired of is: Marshall Stack on the Lower East Side. It’s a cash-only bar with a tiny kitchen (more like kitchen nook), so nothing fancy. The owner and bartenders all know me, which I love, and there’s not a more satisfying meal than a good IPA and their sloppy joe sliders.

Though I can make a mean: chili. me and my slow cooker are in a very serious, committed, long-term relationship. It’s true love that I know will last.

I hope in 5 years: I still love what I do as much as I do today.

Who inspires me: my sister. She is crazy talented, hard working, fun, and is raising two kids who are awesome (which is saying something for someone previously terrified of children). She’s basically Superwoman.
