4 body language tips for a first date

August 9, 2015

.

.

Do you ever think about what nonverbal cues you’re sending out on a date? I had a chance to sit down with body language expert, Tonya Reiman, to discuss ways to get our actions to match our words so we can communicate the message we want to. “What we’re learning is different body poses make someone feel confident or potentially insecure,” she explained. “The goal for me is to teach people to be more confident, authentic, and feel more empowered.” Read on for more of her tips on body language and scent in the art of attraction:

1) Eye contact is good. Stalker stare is not.

There are some standard ways to show you’re interested: tilt your head a bit, smile, lean towards the person, and hold steady eye contact. “You do these things to let the person know they’re the only person in the room that matters.”

But don’t overdo it. “People are under the myth that if a person isn’t willing to hold eye contact, they must be lying. That’s not true. Some people are just uncomfortable holding eye contact,” Reiman explains. Stalker stare [when you’re holding eye contact in a less than natural way], she adds, usually happens when they know the perception is liars don’t hold eye contact. “So what do they do? They stalker stare when they don’t normally make eye contact. That’s a red flag.”

2) Try to minimize distractions.

“One of the biggest thing is people don’t realize they’re distracted by things that are happening outside the two-people scenario. For instance, you’re sitting with someone and somebody walks by and they’re distracted and they look. Those are signals of disinterest. Sometimes it’s just because the person is nervous, so you need to discern if it’s nervousness or real level of disinterested.”

3) To figure out if the other person is interested, observe their own body language.

Are they seated towards you or away from you? Are their hands folded or closed. “If you start to recognize that they’re more open, these are the times that you want to lean in a little bit and potentially touch the person and doing that will automatically make that person feel that connection towards you.” Touch, she says, equal power and confidence.

4) Touch + scent = unforgettable.

Touch is a powerful message but scent makes you unforgettable, Reiman says. Scents like musk, vanilla, amber go  right to a man’s brain and turns them on, she says (all notes in Caress Forever body wash collection, which Reiman is a spokesperson for).

“The real cool thing about the body wash is when you stroke certain areas, it releases the fragrance.” That little indent in your neck she points out is a very vulnerable and sensual area. “I’m always telling women when you’re going on a date wear a little necklace with a small charm (that’s not a heart) an occasionally stroke that because that lets the scent out but also draws attention to your neck.” If you already wear a perfume, you can stack that over the scent of the body wash .

“What you need to realize is scent is a kind of memory, so we have touch which forms bonds and then scent which makes memories. And the memory is because you go right to the hippocampus in the brain which stores long term memory.”

DIY foot and body scrub using essential oils

July 8, 2015

Foot and body scrub ingredients using Vitamin Shoppe's new aromatherapy line

Foot and body scrub ingredients using Vitamin Shoppe’s new aromatherapy line

As promised, I wanted to share a couple more DIY beauty products that I’m obsessed with. I tried the foot scrub just a few days ago and the raw sugar helps to exfoliate, while the coconut oil moisturizes and the essential oils help to revitalize (peppermint) and relax (lavender). And of course, nothing beats an all-natural skin beautifiers. Let me know if you try these! Fair warning: you might find yourself so thoroughly relaxed and unable to do anything except lounge after this. Guilty.

Governors Ball with Dove

June 11, 2015

A quick recap about this before this past weekend’s Governors Ball is stale news (which honestly, I’m still reeling over).

Where's Shy?

Concert watching with 50,000 people!

As you might have seen on my Instagram, I went as a guest of Dove who did an amazing job of making my very first music festival as fun and pleasant as can be. So spoiled that I don’t know how I would have done it without their pimped out cabana/manicure oasis directly next to the main stage (this is what they call #firstworldproblems). In full festival-spirit, they had Lulu DK flash tattoos, flower crowns, and even Dove-scented bubbles flying around our cabanas.

Flower crowns and flower bubbles

Flash tattoos from LuluDK which are so legit -- several showers, workout sessions and even a soak later and they're still holding on!

We started off the day with the Dove team telling us about their mandarin and tiare flower-infused Go Fresh Revitalize Body Wash which I already had sitting in my shower at home. I was just eager to see the bands play, and since we were given access to the main stage and VIP entry to the other two stages, it made concert-watching a fun experience. I didn’t realize the tie in with the body wash would come later.

Seventeen — yes, 17 — hours later, we had a day that started with the pouring rain, then sunshine which we basked in while our shoes got muddy in the freshly-wet grass, and ending with all the sweat from dancing for hours to the best music I’ve heard live in a long time. I saw pretty much everyone I hoped to and more, starting with Priory, Rae Sremmurd, to Chromeo, Future, Florence + the Machine, and ending with Odesza, Ratatat, and DRAKE who couldn’t have brought it home any harder with the finale.

Drake!

When I got home, I was exhausted and just feeling so disgustingly dirty that I bee-lined for the shower. There wasn’t a moment where I could have appreciated the body wash more, so this tie-in was as natural as it gets. After a festival like this, all you want is to be clean and smelling like flowers and rainbows before a good night’s sleep, so well done, Dove.

Thank you the amazing Dove team for an experience I won’t forget! Hope to do it again very soon :).

Two post-workout saviors under $10

June 3, 2015

I’m slowly making my way back to my gym routine post-vacation (which after a measurable bout of jet lag from hopping around Paris to NYC to California and back, has been a struggle). It started with a Surfset class in the East Village hosted by Dr. Teal’s to showcase their Pre & Post Workout Soak and Cream. Dr. Taz, who’s a specialist in integrative medicine, acupuncture, and a certified nutritionist, was there to talk about the benefits of magnesium sulfate to help soothe muscle aches, exfoliate dead skin cells, relieve sore feet, improve sleep, and reduce stress (note: she also mentioned that there is a thing as too much soaking — the recommendation is no more than 20 minutes, three times a week).

Before a sweat session with Surfset

The class left me energized, but it wasn’t until my next workout where I was using weights and did a few dreaded sets of half-up twist sit ups that I woke up completely sore in my upper back. So sore, it took me a few extra minutes to get up because I couldn’t move. I remembered Dr. Teal’s, and since I didn’t have the luxury of time for a soak I grabbed their Pain Relief Cream which also has cooling menthol. It has a light medicinal smell but nowhere near the pungent BenGay kind, and it didn’t leave my back greasy so I could change right after. Then there was my hair situation…

Dr. Teal's Pre & Post Workout Pain Cream and Aussie Total Miracle Dry Shampoo

The night before I took a body shower (I didn’t have enough energy to shampoo and blow out my hair), but of course that means I wake up with some greasy roots. For a quick fix I’ve been turning to Aussie’s Total Miracle Dry Shampoo. Every time I use it, my roommate comments that it smells like blueberries (my favorite!), but even better is it gives a nice boost of volume, goes on relatively sheer if you use it right and sops up any excess oil from your workout (plus it’s only $6 at drugstores). It does have a little bit of a hairspray finish for texture, but if you work it in with your fingers you can break it up pretty quick.

Dr. Teal’s Pre & Post Workout Pain Relief Cream is available at mass retailers for $5.

What are you go-to products after a workout?

Shower tip: Try Dry Brushing!

February 26, 2015

Dry brushing has changed my winter skin life, thanks to Joanna Vargas! So many benefits to just an easy step to add before you shower.

My Dry Brushing essentials

This method exfoliates, helps eliminate cellulite, improves elasticity, and stimulates your lymphatic system. Many naturopathic doctors even use dry brushing to help with bloating since massaging the lymph nodes helps the body shed excess water and toxins. One of the immediate effects, they say, is that it can even help improve digestion, kidney function. And all you need is a $5 brush from the store.

Before jumping in the shower, grab a coarse, dry bristle brush (like the one here) and starting with the feet, brush up on dry skin. Do the same with arms, always towards the heart. In the shower, use an exfoliating wash like Suave’s Sea Mineral Infusion Exfoliating Wash, and end with a lotion (I love their spray lotion since I’m always on the go and it’s faster). You’ll notice your skin is MUCH brighter right away, and so much smoother in two weeks. Try it and let me know what you think!
