Craving of the Day: Hibachi

I recently went out to have Japanese food with my cousins at Sakura in Parsippany, NJ, and though I’m not a sushi-lover myself, I did love watching the hibachi cooking action. It’s when the chefs cooks the food in front of you on a heated flat stove — it was the first time for me!

Not only is it fun to watch the chefs juggle their knives and spatulas around while they cook perfect portions of noodles, stir fried rice, meat, shrimp, and chicken, the food ends up having this great BBQ flavor.

Tea and sugary things at Cha An tea house – East Village

Darjeeling tea

Darjeeling tea

My friend Marie recently introduced me to a hidden oasis — Japanese tea house in the East Village, Cha An. It’s really easy to pass right by it since it’s perched on the second floor of the building. They offer appetizers, desserts, and a full tea menu. We had chocolate-filled mochi balls with tea. If you’re not a fan of dessert of the sticky textures, you should probably skip the mochi and opt for their ice cream instead.

Me and Chef Morimoto! Did I mention he signed my sushi mat for me??

Me and Chef Morimoto! Did I mention he signed my sushi mat for me??

The Iron Chef, Masaharu Morimoto, himself joined his staff for the all-important lesson (although a bum arm meant he wouldn’t be doing the cutting or rolling himself), and we were able to find out more about the restaurant’s own sushi-making in the process.
