Mexican
El Taquito in Austin, TX
By Burger Guy
There’s this taco joint across the street from my apartment called El Taquito. The reviews on Yelp were pretty good so I ran over there just now to get a couple of tacos.
Torchy’s Tacos – Austin, TX

FYI: Burger Guy has relocated to Austin, TX. He also now eats tacos and says “ya’ll.”
Iguana – Tex-Mex in Midtown West
Iguana is one of those restaurants I would always pass by but never thought it was more than a bar. It’s actually way bigger than I had thought (THREE floors to dine and dance) and when my friend had her birthday dinner there recently, I found that the Tex-Mex food they serve there is actually pretty tasty.
I loved the veggie/goat-cheese open-faced quesadilla I had:
I didn’t get to try the other plates, but for your viewing pleasure:
Mission Cafe in the East Village
After the Carolina Herrera show, Hamid and I (and later Mohib!) decided to go for brunch in the East Village. We were walking up 2nd Ave., and Hamid noticed the low-key Mission Cafe. He says the hole-in-the wall places have less space but more love. Word.
Their menu is a mix of Mexican and American food (for some reason they say it’s Middle Eastern on Yelp.com, but I think that’s because it seemed like everyone working there was…c’mon people! It’s definitely not Middle Eastern food!), with plenty of healthy options. Hamid got the egg croissant and I got the huevos rancheros. OK, but I am a little confused because I could have sworn I had taken pictures of our food. Instead, we took these before and after videos of our meal. Enjoy.
Rodeo Grill: Tex-Mex in Murray Hill
My frands were in the mood for some southern grub and basically any place that served fried chicken and mashed potatoes would do, so we went to the honky tonk Rodeo Bar and Grill. It’s a loud bi-level restaurant in Murray Hill that plays live music everyday (though can’t say we were there late enough to hear if the band was any good!).
I love the straight out of Texas woody decor. They served us nachos and watery salsa when we sat down. I was just hoping the subpar salsa wouldn’t be a precursor to the food, but the Chicken Chimichanga plate I ordered was actually REALLY good.
(OK and please Don’t kill me, but I’m delivering phone pics again — this time they’re iPhone pictures my friend helped me out with so they should be a tad better!)
Sunday Brunch in the City: Essex
Sorry BATF’ers. I was SO tired this morning after staying up all night trying to book my vaca tickets, but I’m finally caught up!
Have you ever been to Essex Restaurant for brunch? It’s probably the loudest meal I’ve ever had in the AM with a DJ spinning while you’re having your tea. Makes it seem like the party is carrying over to the morning. The food is actually an interesting mix of Latin-Jewish fare, and the bi-level space used to be an elementary school gym (true story).
They have an all-weekend brunch special for $16 which is probably a little expensive if you’re not drinking (if you are, this includes 3 bloody marys, screwdrivers or mimosas. We just had a couple glasses of orange juice, but the portions are big so makes up for the price if you’re not drinking).
