Coffee lovers, make your way over to Stumptown
I’ve been getting referred to some of the best places lately, and Stumptown has been one my favorites so far. My friend’s cousin, Imraan, recently came to visit NYC from Capetown and told me about this coffee joint he had come across. I figured if he’s missing it from S. Africa, then I definitely have to try.
How awesome are the baristas in their vintage 50s get up? I was not expecting it but love that, along with all the old school roasters hanging back in the decor, add so much to the ambiance — makes it feel so much more authentic.
Mud Truck Coffee
Here’s some awesomely free advice: If you ever see a Mud coffee truck, chase it.
I went to Mud cafe last summer in the East Village, so when I saw the actual Mud truck near the Astor Place subway stop last weekend, I had to try. We ordered two chai lattes and vanilla latte after brunch, and it was SO GOOD.
Random question: What do you put in your coffee?

I’m not a coffee addict, but I can always go for a latte. I have a bad habit of using sugar substitutes like Splenda in my drink though (it’s just sweeter…I have a bad case of a sweet tooth).
My little cousin in on a campaign to stop the family from eating any artificial sweeteners because of its counterintuitive side effects (you may save on calories now, but it also causes you to eat more…sorry, you can’t trick your body into thinking its getting the real thing!), and of course controversy surrounding it’s potential cancer risk.
Bonjour from Paris!

View from the apartment -- the hallway smell like fresh baked bread!
SO sorry for the MIA’ness…this is the first time I got to a computer since coming to Paris! It’s been breathtaking, absolutely surreal. Everywhere you look is just beautiful. This is my first time in Europe, so I’m still soaking it all in. It’s only Day 1, but I’ve been able to wander around most of the Place de la Bastille district where I’m staying, as well as Les Halles and Quatier Latin (Latin Quarter). My French is still not up to par, but the Parisians have been really sweet and helpful, humoring me at times even though my pronunciation is utterly pitiful. Thankfully, the train system has been as easy to follow as everyone had told me it’d be.

Feasting at the Crooked Tree Creperie

Crooked Tree Creperie in the East Village
I’m not sure HOW I’ve always missed this place, considering I’m on this exact street so often for dinner; but I was lucky my friend Mariyam pointed it out as we were looking for a place to have dessert last night (and yes, that’s the blurry top of her head in the picture above; I’m sure she’d want me to point that out).
We sat down and ordered lattes (which we were pleasantly surprised at the generous sized servings), and a nutella crepe with strawberries and bananas.
Simple goodness at Aroma Espresso Bar
Perfect shopping break: Half Avocado sandwich with jalapeƱo pepper, red onion, tomato, lettuce and parsley on whole wheat ($4.40); Latte with mini chocolate ($3.20) — just don’t forget to move the chocolate away from your hot cup o’ coffee, lest you experience the milky goodness in melted form as I did.
