Lip Gloss Confessional: The “Other” Man
If there’s one thing all of us need, it’s having “the one” right by our side…I’m talking lip gloss. For me, that means one that’s easy to apply, easy to remove, not sticky, and finishes my look. Plain and simple.
And once we have that gloss, managing it is practically a project in and of itself: Where did I put it? I hope I didn’t leave it in the car in the heat. Did I remember to put it in my coat pocket before the party? Is it almost finished? Should I buy another one? Is it time to reapply? Should I dump this color for a new one? Ah…the neurosis of it all.
Stila’s 24K lipgloss…complete with a bindi?

Stila 24kt Lip Gloss
But check this — each bottle comes with a handmade Indian bindi on the applicator. No really!! It’s part of their “Indian Summer” 24k gold collection, which also has a bronzing powder, shadows, and smudge pots.
I love how creative beauty product packaging can go. What do you think?
Would you buy “Twilight” lip gloss?

Vampire gloss?
The release states that it’s “a shimmering crimson lip stain suspended in a venom-laced liquid lip conditioner with a bite, and contains argan, avocado, olive oils and vitamin E. This product should be shaken before use to represent the blending of the human and vampire worlds …”

Cool Gloss: C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shines

C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine in Pink Mint
First, some brand trivia: C.O. Bigelow’s flagship has been a West Village staple for almost 170 years, making it the country’s oldest apothecary. Some of its famous customers include Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
They have some long-standing quality items, and I’d say this gloss is just one of their standout products. Their Mentha Lip Shine contains 2% peppermint oil so it has a cool feeling and smells great. I love the Pink Mint (pictured here) which I stole from my friend’s makeup bag yesterday. It has a really pretty subtle pink shine, and all their glosses are fragrance free, with most containing 100% natural mint flavor. The most incredible thing was that it worked wonders on moisturizing my chapped lips (an ongoing complaint of mine that a lot of glosses seem to make worse rather than rectify).
Oh my gloss: Smashbox Desert Chic
Good grief. I have a few favorite lip glosses, but this one has everyone sneaking into my makeup bag. I’m simultaneously stocking up as well, lest the scarcity of this limited-edition product leaves me scouring Sephora for a less-than-adequate replacement.
Smashbox Desert Chic Lip Enhancing Gloss in Sand, is normally $18, though it’s on sale right now at on amazon.com
(2 for $13!). It’s a light, sheer golden beige color, and pairs nicely when you’re playing up your eyes with dark shadows; or even if you’re going for the bare-beachy look with just a little bronzer and nude lips that Cali girls do so well. And don’t worry, ‘Lip Enhancing’ doesn’t mean it’s a plumper that contains irritants. Just that it gives a smooth luster without the glittery shimmer. I also love it because it’s not really a seasonal look — I’ve used it year-round and it looks frosty in the winter, and in the summer it looks, well, chic.
