Last day to catch Madison Square Eats!
If there’s one thing you do tonight, I’d suggest checking out Madison Square Eats if you haven’t yet! I realize this might be sort of a disservice to tell you all about this so late in the game, but since there IS one more day to catch it, I figure why not.
I have been passing by it for months but I FINALLY stopped by last week. They have outposts from some of the best restaurants and food carts in Manhattan and Brooklyn all in one place. The tables and canopy of lights give it such a pretty ambiance too.
I wanted a burger from Graffiti but they had run out so I walked down to the Roberta’s Pizza booth and ordered a seasonal personal size pizza with squash, mushroom, thyme, and basil. Delicious!
A blowout at Drybar: The blow dry-only salon
Perhaps the best part of getting a haircut—aside from the relief of trimmed ends—is the blowout. Everytime I leave the salon I feel both thrilled at how buoyant my hair looks and yet bummed that my hair won’t look this good until the next cut. Sure, I can return to the salon (in my case, The Bird House, my favorite hair studio) for a blowout any time I want, but getting an appointment for a blowout at a salon usually requires a far advance appointment and who has the foresight for that?

Salinas in Chelsea: Last meal in NY (before a short vacay)
I’m sorry for a little lag in posting. It’s been a whirlwind of a week…of a month, for that matter. Trying to update this blog late at night doesn’t always work too well for me when I’m on zero to only a few hours of sleep (literally!). I felt like it was time for a little break. Well, it was actually brought on after my brother sent me a video of my eight-month-old nephew who’s growing up so freaking fast. I barely finished watching this one of him trying to “sing” (which was really him adorably trying to imitate a tune my brother made up), that I found myself booking a ticket to come to visit my family in the Midwest. Hey, you try to resist those dimples! It’s a nice excuse to mellow out before Fashion Week anyway.
Before I left though, I was able to catch a meal at Salinas for a beauty product launch. The Spanish restaurant is fairly new — I believe it opened up just this past summer — with a dimly lit tapas room and bar, dining room which opens up to an airy 35-seat garden in the back where we ate. It’s a gorgeous outdoor space if you’re looking for one.
Dinner with Covergirl’s Jake Bailey & the new LashPerfection mascara
Last night, I joined a handful of writers for an intimate dinner with CoverGirl’s celebrity makeup artist, Jake Bailey at 5Ninth in the Meatpacking District. Bailey is one of those people who is so laidback and funny, you could just as easily forget that his day-to-day includes working with some of the biggest people in Hollywood: Katy Perry, Angelina Jolie, Eva Mendes, and Mariah Carey have all sat in his chair before. But tonight he was alll ours, and we bombarded him for his best makeup tips and tricks…over burgers and chocolate cake.
Here are some of tidbits I learned:
Kingswood in the West Village
After being a fan of Ruby’s for years, it only made sense that I’d eventually have to visit their sister-restaurant, Kingswood in the West Village.
I kept hearing mixed reviews about the place — some rave about it, others seem to be hung up on it having a very see-and-be-seen crowd. I personally was most interested in the food. After going through menus online, I thought I might know what I want. But I think the very edited menu is also seasonal, so not much of what I was looking at before was even there.
