Westville in the West Village
After having a few great eating experiences at Westville East on Avenue A, I thought it would be cool to check out their original outpost in the West Village, simply named Westville.
It’s probably half the size of their East Village location, but I think the food here is even better. It’s a lot cozier too, but be prepared to WAIT. Well, we went with a party of six, and probably waited a good hour before we got seated. Factor in how cold it is outside (considering the size of the place, you’re gonna wait outside), and an hour feels way longer. It’s worth it though, especially when you’re in the mood for some feel-good, yummy food.
Starting with the buffalo wings, which you HAVE to order if you can. I’m not normally the biggest fan of messy wings, but the chicken practically fell off the bones on its own…it was THAT tender.
Malatesta Trattoria – West Village
Last week marked my second visit to Malatesta Trattoria, the first being my birthday earlier this year. It’s a quaint, super cozy Italian restaurant with Italian waiters and deliciously authentic food. Both times I couldn’t help myself and get their homemade gnocchi. They make a special spinach gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce. I’m a lover of cheese, but the gorgonzola might be strong if you’re not — but also, in which case you can order their regular gnocchi with tomato basil. I haven’t had that dish myself, but having tried many of their dishes the last time I was here, I can bet it’s probably just as delicious.
After we were done ogling our neighbors food, my friend Lauren ordered the same dish — the grilled tilapia which was the special of the day.
Brunch at The Cornelia Street Cafe & delicious gelato in Greenwich Village
I guess I’ve been spending a lot more time in Greenwich/West Village. It’s not my fault they have such cute brunch spots! The Cornelia Street Café is no exception in terms of aesthetic — it’s an inviting, chatty cafe with a very neighborhood feel and outdoor seating for sunny days. They change up the artwork monthly (when we went, it was lined with Martin Silverstein paintings). I found out later the cafe has a pretty interesting history — it was opened by three artists in 1977 and doubled as a restaurant and performing theater. People come by to read poetry, play jazz, or even cabaret. It’s now considered an NYC cultural landmark with about 700 shows a year. Unfortunately, I didn’t really feel like the food we ordered lived up to the ambiance.
My friend Shahla and I wanted to split something savory and something sweet, so we went for the Huevos Rancheros (fried eggs with black beans, cheddar cheese, salsa cruda, creme fraiche and corn tortillas, $10). I just didn’t feel like it had a lot of taste…we did order it with egg whites though, so that may be part of the reason. But it was a small portion as well. The buttermilk pancakes were a little better.
Pastries and Lattes at Rocco’s in Greenwich Village
I was introduced to Rocco’s recently in the Greenwich Village, and OMG. Besides their lovely dessert presentation, can I just begin with the fact that their cannoli is perfection?
Noodle Bar in Greenwich Village…Love
There’s nothing I didn’t love about the food we had at Noodle Bar down in Greenwich Village. Their Pan-Asian food is a healthy mix of Thai, Indian, and Korean-inspired (at least by my count). I ordered their Coconut Shrimp dish with spicy flat noodles.
What I loved about this dish was the jumbo shrimp was covered by a thick fried coconut shell where you can really taste the flavor. The flat noodles were delicious too, not overly-doused in oil.
Burgers at Corner Bistro – Greenwich Village
Corner Bistro calls itself the “last of the Bohemian bars” in the village. I’m not really sure what that means. But, it definitely made its mark in the area, where I heard there’s usually a line out the door for a spot to eat here. My friends and I picked a good time to go though: right after work on a weekday. While it was still packed when we went, we got a table right away.
When we asked for the menu, the waiter looked at us funny and pointed to the opposite wall where there was only about eight things on the menu including a burger; a cheeseburger; a bistro burger (with bacon); and fries.
