2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros

February 22, 2012

By Megan Segura

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

Michelle Williams' wears color that complements her skin tone.

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

Graceful Sheen

“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

Aura recommends her A-list clientele use Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, which is designed to seal in color while leaving locks irresistibly smooth to the touch.

“Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier is a red-carpet favorite,” adds Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, “that smoothes the hair surface so it can better prepare the hair for styling.” Andy also uses Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray on his clientele to create the most sheen and expensive looking finish to any end look.

Angelic Side-Chignons

LeCompte predicts that celebs will lean toward classic styles with a play on texture and symmetry. “There will be a lot of deep side parts and loose ponys, bobs and chignons tied to the side.” This style can be customized to accentuate any gown, face shape or hair accessory. “It also lessens the stuffiness of that prom feeling and adds a more up-to-date, laissez-faire feeling.

The options here are endless, but no matter the look, you can use Wella Professionals products to perfect the end look. Apply 3-5 pumps of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier hair primer to create an even surface on each and every hair follicle before drying the hair, creating a foundation for the most luxurious looking end-look. To keep a style looking fresh yet modernly undone, use a light-hold hairspray such as Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold the hair while keeping an overall sense of liquid movement.

The red carpet arrivals of the 84th Annual Academy Awards®, will be airing January 26th on NBC. Be sure to join Wella Professionals on Twitter and Facebook LIVE during the red carpet arrivals (between 4pm and 7pm EST), along with their special guest panel of hair pros Aura Friedman, Rick Wellman and Mark Garrison to get tips, tricks and commentary on the hair looks of the evening.

Can’t wait till then? Visit the red carpet tab on Wella’s Facebook page for tips and leave questions for their experts to answer.

Waxing without worrying about ingrowns (really!)

February 20, 2012

Malin+Goetz Ingrown Hair Cream

I’ve always loved Malin+Goetz‘s philosophy on developing natural-based skincare products for the most sensitive skin types. And of course, the founders Andrew Goetz and Matthew Malin‘s very hands-on approach to growing the brand. The very first time I inquired about them, I got a reply directly from Matthew Malin! Which I guess then shouldn’t have been a surprise that when they launched their new Ingrown Hair Cream (music to my ears!) with Strip: Ministry of Waxing, Andrew Goetz himself was present with Strip’s director Ramon Padilla at their Nolita location, to talk about the new launch. But first, I was set up for an appointment to try it myself!

A dimly lit private waxing space

It was the first time I’ve actually been to Strip (I’ve forever been loyal to Uni.K.Wax previous to this). Strip actually has an interesting back-story because they started in Singapore with owner Cynthia Chua who had developed a much cleaner and less-painful waxes and techniques. Since then, they’ve spread far and wide (from Kuala Lumpur, to Bangkok, and yes, New York). What’s more, her search for quality products led her to Malin+Goetz where a partnership on a new (needed) product was born: the Ingrown Hair Cream. It’s infused with papaya and pineapple enzymes, vitamin E and soothing chamomile.

The waxing room

I walked into the industrial-looking waxing salon and thought I might have taken a wrong turn — its artsy space wasn’t like any waxing place I’ve been to.

Art made by Strip's waxes

I was warmly greeted by Ramon and his staff before going for a session with Cande. I read about the “painless” waxing but I guess I’m always a skeptic till I try it (p.s. how cute are these strawberry stress balls?!).

Strawberry stress balls

Anyway, Cande was fantastic. I can truly say it was one of the most painless waxing sessions I’ve had.Ever. And they are very, very thorough. The price points arecloser to about $60, but their special waxes (let it be noted, they have a strawberry scented wax and another chocolate-scented one that grabs even the smallest hairs) make it worth it. Plus, they’ll use the M+G products right after which is incredible — no redness or burning. It totally did not feel like I was stepping out of a waxing session.

Even if you don’t go to a salon to get waxed, if you deal with ingrowns at all, this product is a dream. Personally my only gripe with waxing ARE ingrowns, so this cream is a must. Now, I’m just rooting for it to come in a bigger size so I won’t feel guilty using it to slather on my legs too, to which Goetz said may be something they’d consider making in the future (yes yes yes!).

The Ingrown Hair Cream is available for $34 at malinandgoetz.com. If you make an appointment at Strip, the product application is included!

4 Skin Savers in my Anti-Aging Kit

February 19, 2012

By Melissa

I’m an extremely loyal person, but not when it comes to beauty products. Much like a 20-something male, my attention begins to wander after a short time spent with my conquests. Sure, I appreciate quality. As my products near the end, though, I have the urge to wander and discover newer–maybe better–products. Hmm…is there such a thing as Beauty Addicts Anonymous?

La Roche Posay Effaclar Pore Refining Anti-Wrinkle Serum, $40

Since my 34th birthday is approaching like a speeding bullet, I’ve been on a mission to overhaul my skincare arsenal. Recently I became obsessed with La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Pore Refining Anti-Wrinkle Serum. It refines the skin and gives it a blemish-free, smooth texture. Despite its strong scent of alcohol, the easily absorbed serum is not at all drying.

Rodin olio lusso crema, $80

I’m also in love with Rodin’s Olio Lusso for the face and Crema for parched hands. Rodin’s Crema is by far the most emollient hand cream I’ve ever experienced–yet it absorbs better than any cream currently on the market. When I asked my friend if it was worth the $80 price tag, she winced but admitted that my hands looked like they did when I was a teenager. Hmm…

Bliss The Youth As We Know It, $74

Bliss couldn’t have better timing when contacting me to try their new The Youth As We Know It face cream. Los Angeles does not reach particularly cold temperatures during the winter months, but the air can become quite dry. Bliss’s anti-oxident rich night cream delivers sufficient moisture for the skin to remain supple, without the weight of traditional night creams. One of the perks to this cream–aside from its delightful, peachy scent–is that it absorbs beautifully and does not feel heavy or greasy.

Embryolisse, $28

My final beauty discovery belongs to Embryolisse. If there’s one thing I learned working on photo shoots for Harper’s Bazaar, it was to ask makeup artists, models, and actresses to divulge the names of their favorite products. They often mentioned Embryolisse, but I never tried the French brand because I thought…well, um…that it contained embryos. Over the years, I’ve learned how incredible this plant-based product is. The Lait-Creme Concentrate (24-Hour Miracle Cream) is a thin, emollient, yet highly absorbent lotion that delivers extreme moisture to the skin. It’s the perfect remedy for winter worn skin…or 34th birthdays.

What’s your favorite anti-aging product?

American - Burgers - FOOD - "The Delicious"

Blue Dog Tavern in Sherman Oaks, California

February 18, 2012

By Manisha Jogia

I am notorious for wanting to stay in my bubble. Whether it is for food, shopping, bars, or whatever, if it is more than five miles away I will probably pass on it. I guess I’m just a creature of habit. However, last night I decided to check out a new restaurant: Blue Dog Tavern in Sherman Oaks, which supposedly serves one of the greatest burgers of all time.

Blue Dog Tavern

When pulling into the parking lot and seeing this place, I second-guessed my decision. To put it nicely, it kind of looked like a shack. There was a small outside patio that was empty because it is 60 degrees in LA – which for us Angelinos is winter.

Inside (source: Blue Dog website)

I step inside to find the place completely packed. It is no bigger than a studio apartment and along with the outside, looks like it is under construction. There are wood panels all over the place and it is a maze to get through.

Thankfully there was a tiny table available, between two other tables, hardly two inches apart. I took my seat, feeling squished and trying to keep my arms from touching the people next to me. One of the first things I noticed was a myriad of puppy and dog pictures hanging on the walls. There were dogs of all shapes and sizes and they covered the place floor to ceiling. The second thing I noticed was the crowd. There were couples ranging from 21- their late 50’s. But most of all, I noticed that people seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was a definite homey, Cheers vibe going on.

The Popper Burger

Two menus were put in front of me. One was packed with a wide assortment of house and domestic beers, bottled and on tap, ciders, and wines- all at very reasonable prices, and the other was the food menu. Now, I am an indecisive person, but when I say I had a hard time choosing what I wanted because everything just looked so damn delicious, I am not exaggerating. They had a variety of food to order from. Sandwiches, chicken Wings…but it was their list of signature burgers that was outstanding. They had burgers for every taste bud. Whether you are looking for something more of a barbeque flavor or something even a little sweet, they had it. Now, I have a very spicy palette, so I was torn between the The Fire Starter, which included pepper jack cheese, chipotle sauce, and fresh jalapenos, and The Popper. The Popper had pretty much everything the former had except it included jalapeno poppers and something that was far ahead of the competition-a mixture of Velveeta AND cream cheese. I was in heaven.

The burger was absolutely one of the best I had ever tasted. It was cooked medium-rare, which I don’t usually prefer, but I wouldn’t change a thing about this masterpiece. Every bite was just as good as the last. It was served with a side of home-made coleslaw and garlic fries. Now these weren’t just fries with garlic powder thrown on top. These were fries that literally had smashed garlic all up in it. My taste buds were going nuts. I was tasting salty, spicy, garlic-y, cheesy-and I was LOVING it.
And even though I finished my entire meal, when I saw fresh, warm home-made giant cookies with rich Vanilla ice cream in the middle, I had to tell my stomach to make some room. Oh…and it did. It’s a simple treat but something that always hits the spot. I was thoroughly satisfied.

Dessert!

The service here is great; very quick and very friendly. You can tell that this a fun place to work. The staff is happy to be there and all the customers are burger in hand with smiles on their faces. I would definitely recommend this quaint but lively place to any group of people. Whether you are going on a date or meeting friends for drinks, Blue Dog Tavern’s reasonable prices and delicious menu will be an experience you won’t regret…though your jeans might.

MAC’s Viva Glam Launch party with Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin

So Fashion Week is officially over, and I’m on my couch sipping TheraFlu. Yesss. The good news is I survived pretty much all the backstage reporting and events, including the last one I went to, which was MAC Cosmetics VivaGlam launch with Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin. And let me say, MAC went all out for the launch party…check out the digs:

.

And those letters? Were totally spinning the whole time. And I almost totally ran into them more than a few times. It’s true.

.

Anyway. The party was to officially introduce Minaj and Martin as MAC’s new Viva Glam spokespeople. Every cent of products goes to support the MAC AIDS Fund. Nicki came out with a Barbie pink lipstick ($14.50) while Ricky came out with his colorless lip conditioner ($15). The two came on stage in what was a mother of entrances (complete with fog, lights, and a whole stage that spun in a total 180 where Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin appeared on a motorcycle).

Speaking about Viva Glam

The entrance

No Roman Holiday or La Vida Loca performances from the two (sad face), but that was OK…because when the stage spun around one more time, a smiling DJ Benny Benassi appeared spinning the most amazing tunes (I took a snippet of it on my YouTube…I so wish I taped more!).

Benny Benassi

I’d say it was the highlight of the week. Had so much fun with the beauty girls. And there was quite a crowd in attendance: Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, Kelly Osbourne, Angela Simmons, Coco Rochas, Tinsley Mortimer, and more. Here are some more pics from the night!
