More looks from MAC backstage at the IIFA Awards

IIFA Awards stage the morning before

I already gave you a peek backstage at the IIFA Awards of the looks M.A.C.’s Vimi Joshi created for all six performances at the show. The inspiration came from Bollywood, it was “a celebration” inspired by Bollywood she said. The focus was all in the eyes (with insanely dramatic eyelashes), with a green glitter winged liner that stayed throughout all the performances. What did change though were the lipsticks and bindi placements. Take a look below:

5 brands that really stood out to me at The Makeup Show NYC

If you’ve never been to The Makeup Show, a professional makeup artist-targeted convention, just picture a colorful girly cosmetics wonderland — a very overwhelming one. There are tons of quality brands showcasing the best they have to offer and it can get a little hard to figure out just where to start. I felt like this year I got to really spend time at some of booths, and talk to the people behind the brands. After a very fruitful (and exhausting) round at the show in NYC, I felt like these five brands really stuck with me even after the show this year…and I bought many of the products to prove it!:

Lipstick reviewing on the street

You guys, I think I really impressed myself yesterday. I did my first ever lipstick review while I was walking down the street…like literally busted out my new ruby red Covergirl Lip Perfection lipstick in Hot Passion, tried it on for the first time on my way to dinner, and began snapping these pictures away while my friend (who will remain unnamed) obnoxiously started yelling out “OHMYGOD Shyema, I can’t believe you are SOO into yourself that you’re standing here in the middle of the street, taking pictures of your lips…seriously who DOES that?…” Just to embarrass me, of course. Cuz you know, my friends are awesome. But I remain steadfast in my pursuit of awe-inspiringly scarlet lips, and this lipstick ROCKS.

Lipstick testing..

ROCKS. This was also the quickest lipstick test I’ve ever done. I think I need to do it more often. Sans obnoxious friends (who also totally jacked this lipstick from me right after…true story).

My travel makeup bag…

I can’t claim to be the best packer, but I can say that I’ve made significant strides in overcoming the need to pack my entire apartment for a trip. When it comes to rounding up my makeup and skin products, I stress. For one, sifting through all the different products and shades while you’re still trying to figure out what exactly you’ll be doing on your trip is just not fun. Second, I used to think this whole “all your liquids have to fit inside this little baggy if you want to take in on board or else we’re gonna throw it away right in front of you and crying won’t help” was just crap. But I realized that it forces me to pick and choose what I really need. And for my current trip to Miami, it kinda looks like this:

My travel makeup bag

{What? I’m a beauty writer. Leave me alone} Anyway, since it’s a combo of some of my old and new faves, I thought I’d share.

Travel face products

Left to Right:
1. CERAVE AM and PM moisturizers (in little travel capsules), $14 each
2. MAKE UP FOR EVER Uplight Face Illuminizer Gel, $29
3. MARIO BADESCU Enzyme Cleansing Gel, $12 for 8 oz.
4. SMASHBOX Photo Finish Primer, $16 for .5 fl oz.
5. MD SOLAR SCIENCES Tinted Mineral Screen sunblock, $24
6. MEHRON Celebré HD Pro Cream Foundations, $9 each

I already told you all how much I love Mario Badescu and CeraVe face products. I think these little travel capsules are so clutch for a short trip. You can fit a lot of cream in it and it’ll last you longer than you think. I was sent Make Up For Ever’s Uplight to experiment with and what I found was the only illuminizer I ever liked using (that doesn’t look tacky, doesn’t crease, and since it’s water-based, won’t irritate my skin). More on this soon! I usually like to take one primer with me too, something I can wear under my makeup to help it last longer and look more even. I decided to go with Smashbox Photo Finish (good for pics!), and the small size was perfect for traveling. I also recently got introduced to MD SolarSciences when they sent me their Tinted Mineral Gel. It’s perfect for Miami because it’s not greasy AT ALL, water-resistant, goes on super smooth, and doesn’t make anything I put on top all gooky. I’m pretty particular about my sunblock, and I’m putting this up there with Neutrogena (another fave of mine).

In search of a won’t-kiss-off-on-my-boyfriend lip color

By Archana Ram

The contenders, CoverGirl Outlast All-Day, Lipstain, and Illamasqua

I’ve been pretty proud of my minimal makeup routine of eyeliner plus concealer for years (12 to be exact), but once I hit my mid-twenties, I wanted to step up my game. Eyeshadows quickly proved to be too tricky, leaving me looking like I got a black eye. And with my already-rosy complexion, too much blush makes look like I’m trying to channel Bozo. Instead, I’ve recently become enamored by lipstick. But with a voracious appetite and a boyfriend I’m not afraid to smooch in public, I needed one that was long-lasting (for food) and wouldn’t rub off (for him).

And so was my mission. I tried three highly recommended lip colors: CoverGirl’s Outlast All-Day Lip Color, CoverGirl’s Outlast lipstain and lipstick by U.K. brand Illamasqua. For all three, I wore them for about four hours, which included a dinner.
